So if I leave my notebook on the cooling fan never comes on so it eventually overheats and crashes. I bought one of those cooling units that go underneath the laptop and that has helped out a great deal, but is this a part I can just buy, or do I need to call Sony.

I used to have a program on my old dell that did that although I don’t know of one that would work with this laptop. Also yes the fan worked when the computer was new.
Honestly I would try something like Speedfan (I’m not sure if it works on the TX, you should do the research) before pulling out the unit and trying to replace it. It may be a program that is causing the fan to work instead of a broken fan. Beyond that, I’m sure it can be replaced, and you can order parts from sony.com/accessories.
I’m having the same problems as OP. I’m almost certain that its not a program interfering with the fan, because for the past month the fan has been making wheezing grinding noises like its about to go out. Then the noise stopped and I thought the problem went away, but my laptop started heating up quick.
I took it apart and ran it with the lid open, turns out the fan wasn’t working. I started cleaning the mainboard and the cpu fan thinking that maybe some dust bunnies had jammed it up, turned it back on and still nothing. I’m thinking of replacing the fan but haven’t figured out a way to remove it (2 big brass screws are holding it place)
The part number that I got off the fan Toshiba DC Brushless, MCF-513AM05-1, DC5v 250mmA
Right now Im using a laptop cooling pad and staying away from anything that would tax the cpu too much (afraid of overheating)
So any help anyone can provide would be appreciated, any diagrams how to’s or pics on replacing the fan

I assume you can’t just unscrew it then?
Do you have pictures of the fan and the area around it? Sometimes they screw things in from under the motherboard, so you may need to remove the entire thing to unscrew the fan. Usually it’s clips that hold it in place.
Can’t unscrew them, its not really a normal screw (hard to explain without pics)
Sorry I don’t have any pics, should have taken a few as I was taking it apart. Will post some as soon as I get back from my trip.

My Vaio T1XP has started moaning from the fan.
A quick brush + vac + lube hans’t helped
Seems to be wear + tear, as it’s less pronounced when stood on its side
So question is do you still have a MCF-513AM05 to spare?
Sorry for replying to a what looks like a dead topic…
But to remove the 2 brass screws, you need to remove the motherboard, since they are screwed at the bottom of the motherboard. Also, you will need some thermic paste, or what ever it is called. (I can’t remember at the moment).
