Hey Guys check this out. I was just browsing through ebay as a part of my OCD routine.. when i came across this auction: 160127400887

  It seems someone just gutted a TR, and stuck it in a custom casing. The Idea falls along the lines of the mac mini without the clean finish.

  Its interesting to see how customizable this PC really is. I dont think Sony ever anticipated the Huge success that this particular model has had over the years. The TR still fetches upwards of $700 on ebay and its been out for a solid 5 years.

  I must admit, i will never take the TR apart like this and cram the insides into a box but I am constantly on the lookout for something new and different that can be done with this beautiful laptop. Anyway, just thought that someone might like this form factor and might wanna give it a good ole sopranos ‘wack’.

My God that is so cool! I have to agree with everything you said about how cool the TR laptops really are. I too am always looking for fabrications and ideas with the TRs.

I bid on it, although it wasn’t high enough to meet the reserve.

I don’t see him getting anywhere near the $899 buy it now…but who knows.

That’s actually pretty cool. It gives me some ideas of what I would do with my TR and VAIO S when they’re “old”. Nice find!

I agree with you regarding the steep asking price Erik. I think the $899 price is suppose to justify the work put in along with extras not included in the U.S TR’s (bluetooth, 60GB HD etc) But if ive learned one thing on ebay, never underestimate the neurosis of a compulsive shopper/ebay addict. Its all about whos watching the auction with some part being played by the quality of the item being sold… No, im not an ebay promoter!

  It looks fairly easy to do.. apart from making holes in the casing for the ports shown in the back but im sure looks are decieving in this case. I would think the motherboard was lifted as is from the TR and transferred over.. but then i had a closer look at the all the ports in the back and boy, will this require a lot of manuevering and patience. Good work though. I would love to see someone here try this.. wheres that guy who Changed the CPU on the TR to 1.2

  Gr00vy, wouldnt it be easier to just take the screen off the S or the TR and basically have the same thing. Aaa, As you can tell ‘hardwork’ is not second nature to me! 

An even “lazier” way to do this is to simply use the TR or S as-is and keep it closed all the time. It requires no disassembly and makes for a handy way to take it around and for quick troubleshooting.

That’s why I think the price point is too high…just a standard TR with the screen closed is the same and you can always use it as a notebook. I use my ‘extra’ X505 as a PC without a screen…I just RDC or VNC to use it.

Well, it went for $305.00 That was reasonable, I would of played with it for that price.

My max was $275 which is what I thought it was worth…$305 is certainly reasonable, as you said. I didn’t realize ebay no longer tells you who bid on a non-private auction. All these weird new rules.
