I am thinking about painting my little TR a different color. I have done modifications before to all kinds of things, so this might be another one of those.

What does everyone think?

I painted my TR before .. because of a little crack on one of the angles on the top cover caused by a laptop fall :(  .. I first closed the crack with a kind of ceramic material .. and because of the difference of the ceramic material and the cover’s color .. I decided to paint the whole cover with a new color .. and I chose a spray paint for plastics .. after that and with no experience in painting .. I painted the cover and the first result was so bad .. So I tried to paint it again and the result at the 2nd try seemed reasonable compared with the first try .. so I accepted that .. but the real problem appeared after couple of days when the paint started to peel off .. so then I knew that I chose the wrong paint although the seller told me that it will works on the cover ..

I didn’t buy a new paint .. because at that time I got a great idea :idea:  .. this idea won’t cost very much and won’t take a real time .. It’s just to use the sticker that used to cover the cars to cover my TR instead of paint .. and It works great ..  take a look :

Thanks Q80 for the input AND the pictures! I thought about just using plain vinyl that import cars use for graphics. I have thought about case skins as well.

But if I decide to change the color, I will paint the laptop. I know I could use the interior vinyl paint that is used for painting interior car parts (done this to a part of my car and it looks factory).

Anyway, your mod looks really nice and inspires me more!

However. Painting plastic surfaces isnt that simple. You should clean the surface thoroughly. You should also take some time to sand off the old paint (because you dont know what kind of paint it is) and prepare it for painting with a special stuff that makes the paint stick better (ask your local paint dealer).

That will do just fine.

Spray painting has another difficulty. You wont be happy with the surface if you spray paint it at home… there will be lots of dust on the surface of your new paint!

Instead of painting it at home you can just take the parts to the car paint shop. Let them paint it in their dust free cabin for 10 bucks! Result will be much better! The only question left for me is… shall I make it glossy or not?

Part of the problem could be that the lid and base of the tr is not plastic, but a very light weight magnesium alloy. It is painted in the silver colour so this would require removal or preparation before painting.

I have an old damaged chassis here I might repair and see how it goes using regular automotive car spray can paint

I found a post on a different forum of a guy that did this himself with the same steps as painting a car would take. It looked really nice.

So, since I have a buddy that works for a body shop, I am going to maybe try to get him to have some guys do it for me, making sure they understand not to make the paint thick so the pieces don’t fit together.

maybe a pearl white metalic so the outside matches the inside, or a deep gloss metalic black.  8)

I want the deep gloss metallic black. I thought about adding a design, but if and I mean a BIG if, I decide to sell the laptop down the road, just a normal color will not take away from the ease of selling it.
