[quote author=“Andrzej”]Please specify where did you find X505 drivers and utilities that works with vista…any link on this forum
Should I use those on vaio support page?
Yep… Those are the ones. I couldn’t get SoundMax working with the Drivers on the Vaio x505 site.
Use the Device Manager > Update Driver > Browse to the Unzip Folder to force the Wifi & SoundMax Driver installs.
Install the Utilities then go to Control Panel > Programs and Features (the new Add/Remove Programs) and uninstall the Notebook Set-up, Vaio Power Settings and Vaio Update Utilities.
I’d advise removing the Recovery Partition and using one large partition when you install Vista (as long as you have a Recovery CD).
I’d also advise against using BitLocker. It utilizes 1.5Gb of the Harddrive and imposes a 10-20% performance hit on the Operating System. You’re better off creating an encrypted folder and storing your Sensitive Files there. It doesnt make sense to encrypt all of your System & Program Files unless you’re with the FBI or CIA or Something. Know that Microsoft left a back-door into BitLocked Drives, so if someone wants in badly enough they’ll get in.

While I don’t disagree that MS left a back door, is there any proof of this? I was at an MSDN conference this past week and BL was brought up and they claimed they make no expection to law enforcement and that there was no back door…
Anyway, it’s a moot point because the vaio doesn’t recognize a USB key so BL cannot be enabled (or at least I haven’t been able to).
My sources @ Microsoft tell me there is a back-door, but I can’t confirm this 100 Percent.
Assuming you’ve partitioned your Harddrive correctly, you can enable BitLocker to run on a sytem without a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) Chip on the Motherboard by:
1. Start > Type gpedit.msc into search pane (Group Policy Object Editor)
2. Browse to: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > BitLocker Drive Encryption
3. Click Control Panel Setup: enable Advanced startup options
4. Check <Enabled>
5. Make sure Allow BitLocker without a compatable TPM (requires a startup key on a USB flash drive) is checked
6. You now can go through the BitLocker Setup Program in the Control Panel
Make sure that you backup your USB Key in a Safe Location, if you lose it, retrieving your data without it will be very difficult if not impossible!

This is the method to using a simple USB key, however, as I said before the x505 doesn’t recognize the USB key upon boot and I can’t get it to work. After enabling it (and putting the unlock key on the usb key) Vista wants to restart to check the USB prior to encypting the entire drive. This is where I fail as it keeps telling me it didn’t see the USB drive upon boot.
I am in the process of finding out if I have the latest version of the BIOS, but since I have an import, it’s taking a bit longer then expected.
Hello
i have just remve my recovery partion.
On my second laptop I installed vlite(appz) and copy full entire of vista to some catalog(of course extracted)
Using vlite I reduced vista size by removing windows media,games,bi- something for cripto, and other useless things.
The same appz gave me opportunity to create iso and burned it
I booted from that disk my x505
After instalation i used x505 drivers and utils as you have suggested.
Then I installed office 2007 without groove, infopath ,outlook and some extras
Now I have fully &smoothly; working machine and 13GB free disk storage for other purposes
Erik—in your signature you said you have upgraded to 30 GB HDD, so is the 7.5 GB free with a regular 20 GB HDD or with the upgraded 30? Obviously if only 7.5 GB is free then installing Vista on a 20 GB would be a bad idea…

After installing Vista Ultimate I had 10.65 free (I had split that into two drives).
“After the install (Ultimate Edition + AVG Antivirus), I had 9.24GB free with 1.4GB on the other drive (for those not bitlocking you would have ~10.65GB Free, even more if you use a lesser edition of Vista): “
After installing office I had 9GB Free.
“After installing Office2007 Ultimate with most of the options, I ended up with 7.59GB free (~9GB Free without Bitlock drive): “
Now that I upgraded my drive I had about 18GB free after Vista AND Office.
