Hi The Stig -
Begin by creating a folder on your hard disk (suggest C:\Sony) and then copy KCAP.EXE into that folder.
1. Insert each Application Restore CD in your computer.
2. You may get a warning that the CD was not designed to be run on your computer or from within Windows - click the OK button.
3. Look for a file called SONY*.PAC (on newer systems there will be a number following SONY .. write this down and be sure to insert it in place of the asterisk in the following).
4. Copy SONY*.PAC to C:\Sony. This will take some time.
5. Click START | RUN and type the command “C:\SONY\KCAP C:\SONY*.PAC C:\SONY” (less the quotes).
6. KCAP will unpack sub-folders to C:\Sony, each containing a different application .. this will take some time. KCAP produces no screen output. You can watch it from the Windows Task Manager and proceed with the following when the process disappears.
7. Delete SONY*.PAC from C:\Sony.
8. Repeat steps 1 - 7 for each of your Restore CD’s.
9. Look at Appinfo.ini on the CD that contains the ART folder. This file contains a listing of the applications that shipped with your computer, along the name of the sub-folder.
For example:
[Sony Shared Library]
text=Sony Shared Library
desc=Utility for Sony applications.
cmd=0207001.snc\setup.exe
...
installorder=2
Tells us that the Sony Shared Library is in the folder 0207001.snc and it should be installed as the second application, after the Sony Drivers.
10. For applications you want, rename the sub-folder to avoid confusion. In the example above, rename “C:\Sony\0207001.snc” to “C:\Sony\Sony Shared Library”.
11. Delete sub-folders for applications you don’t want.
12. When finished with steps 9 - 11, click on Start | Run and navigate to each of the you wish to install, keeping in mind to preserve the “installorder” from Appinfo.ini.
For Example:
. Sony Drivers installer
. Sony Utilities Library/Sony Shared Library installer (if found)
. Sony Utilities DLL installer (if found)
. Hotkey Utility installer
. Sony Notebook Setup Utility installer
. Power Panel Utility installer
... etc.
13. When finished, you can burn C:\Sony to a CD and you’ll have a backup of your installers for future restore, if needed.
Hopefully this is of some help to you.
