So, I managed to spill some water next to my TR1MP whilst I was sleeping. It was in suspend mode at the time with the lid closed, but when I woke up this morning it was all turned off and floating in water. I immediately set about ripping it apart. The case had some water in it and the motherboard was covered in green slime so I washed it off under clean tap water and let it dry out thoroughly in the sun. In the mean time I cleaned out the case, and inspected everything else, all of which seemed to be ok. I cant really tell if the HDD is gone but it was only a little wet and Im guessing very well sealed. Luckily I didnt lose anything important.

When I went back to the motherboard I could see a few burnt SMT chips, particularly one right next to the northbridge which was actually cracked but I put it all back together and tried it but with no luck, wont power up. So my situation is that I have a dead motherboard but a good (as far as i know) everthing else. What is my best option here? Im assuming motherboards are impossible to find and very expensive, so should I part it out and sell? Im just trying to claw back some money from what is turning out to be a very silly and expensive mistake!

From what I have seen, buying a motherboard is pretty close to what you already know - mostly hard to find and/or expensive. Personally, I would just buy another one because there is no guarantee the replacement motherboard will work and/or that is the ONLY problem you have.

I spilled 6 drops of Mt. Dew on a Sony keyboard (desktop) one time. The kicker is, all 6 were sitting on the keys so I would have been fine, but nooooo, my stupidity, I blew them off with my mouth and of course, all of them went into the keyboard and instantly make the keys type something different. Since then, I NEVER put liquid that has no SEALED lid near any computer stuff.

I recently got a quote for just over 1100 euros for a TR1 mobo direct from sony.

I got them to take a look at it and they tested everything for me and it was just the mobo, quite handy as I could sell the other working parts.

I bought an external 1.8” usb case from ebay and recovered all my stuff, and I now have a very small external HDD for my new Sony SZ.

Thanks a lot for the replies guys. I think buying a new motherboard isnbt going to happen then, so when I get some free time I’ll start taking the other parts out and seeing what I can do with them.

The 1.8” external hard drive sounds like a VERY good idea, I assume it can be powered through the USB port too?

Thats the exact one I bought, Make sure its a Hitatchi HDD.

Its USB powered and its tiny, seriously handy little bit of Kit.

Try to contact PC Centre Hong Kong.

They once offered me a MoBo for about 300-400 Dollars… its worth a try!
