well, i think i will be keeping my tr for a while after that nightmare of broken screen a few months back.  thanks to this forum somebody offered me an lcd screen that i can afford. 

i have a lot of pictures, music and video clips that i wanted them in external hard drive.  is that possible?  can any tr experts here recommend me of something?

i am really thinking hard of upgrading my cd/rw to dvd/rw but i am not that confident yet that’s why i’d like to opt with just external hard drive so my important documents are stored safely without fear of crash etc.

Since the TRs are so small, I would recommend buying an external hard drive kit and using a laptop drive of at least 40GB in size. It makes for a small and very easy storage unit that doesn’t require much space or plug in cords. I also recommend buying the kit and drive separate as it is easier to change drives this way.

Just be sure to back up your files since it could be easily stolen or dropped. Hope this helps!

My experience with the TR and an external drive is this: With a 2.5 laptop drive, the start up when connecting via USB is a big load on the port. I get a message to that effect. I used my old 40g 1.8 hard drive from my TR (after I upgraded to a 60g) It works fine when powering up. (no message)

I haven’t tried my 2.5 40GB USB hard drive yet, but check this! I bought a 2-port Serial ATA PCMCIA card and hooked it up to my TR2A…3.5” 500GB SATA drive works wonderfully!

I just make sure when I start my computer, I wait until all the programs have been loaded in the taskbar and then turn on the external drive. I haven’t had a problem yet!

If it’s externally powered, it won’t be a problem. All 3.5 hard drive enclosures are. But, 2.5 hard drive enclosures are usually powered off the USB port.

Yes you are correct and that is why I had mentioned I hadn’t tried my 40GB 2.5 external drive yet. I just wanted to share with everyone that there aren’t any issues that I have come across in accessing a very large SATA drive either.

I will try the 40GB today and post here what happens…hopefully only good things!

So this afternoon I plugged in the external 40GB drive with the laptop already on. No errors. Then I shut the laptop off, left the drive plugged in and turned the laptop back on. Same thing, no errors.

I then tried moving a large file, about 2GB in size and had no problems with it. So that was good news as I would rather tote around the 40GB drive than the 500GB drive when I am out and about. It also is larger than the little flash drives available so it works out nicely.

I will be sure to post any issues I may have if I do!
