This could be a red herring, but I’m now not able to run smartwi.exe.  I successfully installed the bluetooth patch a few weeks ago, verified that it worked with my BT-800 and promptly got involved in other things.

Then today when I boot, or whenever I try to run smartwi.exe, it fails with the message that “smartwi.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.”

I downloaded a fresh copy of smartwi.exe from Sony, and installed it, but it still won’t load.

Could this be related to the patch?

Nope, sorry, no breakthroughs here either.  But it’s strangely comforting knowing that there’s at least one other schmuck out there with the same problem.  :?

If I hear anything, I’ll post something here—but I’m not holding my breath.  I don’t think this problem is going to go away until I move to a new notebook.  :cry:

Have had it for 6 months….

I have a Sony Vaio VGNTX650P.

You would THINK that Sony would have tracked this problem down by now…..  especially since it is obviously a software bug…

Do you think there’s any harm in simply uninstalling the SmartWi utility?

Hey can you detail the DLL fix your IT guys found? Do you mean you had to hex edit the DLL to fix it?  Or somehow extract a DLL from the install package and overwrite it?

I have this problem—and just deveoped it when installed the drivers for my Motorola SLVR handset.  Perhaps bluetooth related.  I tried installing the new drivers for the network adapter from sony’s site, and also the smartwi utility to no avail.

And my buddy “Kumar” at Sony support helpfully suggests I reformat my entire machine.  Uh…yeah sounds like a great solution.

You have to deinstall the smartwi utility before reinstalling it. make sure not to deinstall the other portion otherwise you’ll need to download and install that as well. this process has always fixed it for me. now i don’t even run smartwi. it’s a complete waste of resources. you can turn everything on and off faster with Fn + F1 with a graphical GUI.

Hmm.  Fn + F1 doesn’t work for me with smartwi uninstalled.  You sure this works?

T350p here.
Started blue screening when shutting down WWAN.
Went to Sonyland, got the latest updated for Pro / Intel wireless.
Completely crapped out SmartWifi.exe in 1Wlanplugin.plugin

Chatted Sony, said, “reinstall smart wifi”
Didn’t help.

Rolled back with System restore 2 weeks.
All works again.

If you recently updated your old Intel® PRO/Wireless Network drivers to new one then you will have a problem with Sony® SmartWi™ Connection Utility. Why? Because Sony® SmartWi™ Connection Utility does not work with new Intel® PRO/Wireless Network drivers. You either need to install your old WI-FI drivers or need to wait till Sony release the new patch for SmartWi Utilities.

Here’s my experience:

Sony Support was of no help.
Uninstalling and reinstalling did not fix the problem.
Installing a newly downloaded version did not solve the problem.
Fn + F1 doesn’t work for me.
I couldn’t do a system restore since it was so long ago that SmartWi stopped working.
My Intel® PRO/Wireless Network drivers are not the problem because they are as old as my computer (also, there are no drivers to roll back to).

Ugh. Just installed the Wireless driver update on my T350P and the SmartWi utility isn’t loading. From the looks of this thread it seems that there is not a fix for this issue so I have a question.

Is there a way to switch from WWAN to WLAN without the SmartWi app?

I also had the same problem but I finally managed to fix it.  I had to download the original versions of the 2200g WLAN driver and the original Smart Wifi software from Sony’s esupport website.  I then unistalled the 2200g WLAN device using device manager.  Next I installed the new 2200g driver.  Rebooted.  Uninstalled the Smart Wifi software.  Rebooted.  Reinstalled the Smart Wifi software.  Rebooted.  Everything works great including the switching between the Cingular WWAN and the regular WLAN.
