Argh, whats the deal with its fan? I thought its Pentium M ULV processor would allow it to stay cool most of the time, and not let the blasted fan run constantly, its really loud and annoying in a dead silent room.
That is my only complaint of the TX series, otherwise, its a fanastic notebook.
Yeah, the fan’s really noticeable in a dead silet room. Just keeps running and running, never stops for a millisecond. Arrgh!!!!
Also, I remember reading a whilte back that the TX2 series (TX7XX in the U.S) would be fanless, it even said so in the official press release by Sony. But of course we all know that wasn’t the case. How could Sony blatantly lie like that? That just boggles my mind how they said it would have no fan but it was a complete freaking lie!
How is the Fujitsu Lifebook P7120 able to be fanless and not the TX by the way????
Is there anyway to lessen the fan noise? Its driving me nuts though I think I would eventually get used to it…..still…....
There is no fan near the processor, but there is one placed in the chassis to churn out the hot air. And let’s hope that the next model will be COMPLETELY fanless…
I have TX790P, North American model, called the TX2XP in Europe and elsewhere.
Yeah, the TX3XPs are the TX8XX in North America and have the Core Solo Intel GMA 950 graphics, and fingerprint reader right?
Maybe these latest TXs have finally had their fan noise fixed?
Actually as I type this now as opposed to my first post, the fan noise seems to be decreased? :?
yeah, the tx3 are coming with fingerprint readers, actually, i had the machine with me on a whole weekend, and either iam getting old and cant hear shit, or its really that i havent noticed any fan noise
Sorry to disappoint, but the TX3XP does have the same fan as the TX2…
On.
Off.
On.
Off.
It’s not a major problem though - especially when running on batteries;the machine is so utterly fantastic in nearly every other way!
Now just hurry up with the official Vista drivers.
On mine, the fan kicks in after a short while and never shuts off.
By now, I’ve gotten used to it now. It is nothing compared to the monster fan my old HP destop from 2001, god that thing was noisy. I’ve gotten used to the fan noise in this TX now.
But I still want to know how is it that the Lifebook P7120 is passively cooled and needs no fan but not the Vaio TX?
And also angry that in Sony’s OFFICIAL press release of the TX2 that it CLEARLY said there was no fan, how could they LIE like that!?
Please does anyone have any tips? Is the constant fan noise true for all TX owners out there? It just runs at long as my laptop is on, NEVER turns off, NEVER EVER EVER!
The Vaio T and my Lifebook P5020 many times were dead silent, why is this so loud!?!?

Have you tried setting your Processor’s performance to Adaptive? Mine shuts off when I close all programs after a few seconds it throttles down, I think I suspect a software that kicks in if your TX is idle, try finding it and configure it.
When running on battery power my fan only comes on occasionally, but on AC power it’s still never on permanently, just on and off frequently, depending on what I’m using the machine for. Some websites will even send the fan into full speed, I guess because of Flash content or whatever.
Does your fan operate constantly on battery power?
Whether the laptop is on battery or AC power, the fan will keep running, no matter what, as long as the notebook is powered on, so is the fan.
I am worried that the fan will wear out very early if it keeps spinning as long as the notebook is on?
Please, is there any way to lessen or even eliminate the fan from coming on at times? I don’t understand how the fan would keep having to run with a ULV processor.
Everyone says that the previous Vaio Ts were much quieter and I fully beleive them, the one I tried back last year were dead silent at times. Same went for when I owned a Fujitsu Lifebook P5020D two years ago, many times on battery at least, it was dead silent.
Is it perhaps because of the thinner design of this notebook?
Plugged In -> CPU Control = Adaptive
-> CPU Fan Control = Level 5(performance)
Running on batteries -> CPU Control = Adaptive
-> CPU Fan Control = Level 5(performance)
*And also you might want to update your Sony Power Management. If it’s not on your model specific list try installing from other model numbers that lists Power Management update. Try this if it works on your model here .
Hmmm, when I installed that power management update a while back, it eliminated the entire Vaio power management Tab, which really limited the customization. I had to do a restore to get the power management tab back.
Anyway, it doesn’t sound like that happened when you installed it?
after hearing about the update, i did download the powermanagement update and it worked out fine for me. i think it actually reduce the fan on and off for me on battery, but for plugin usage, it thinks its about the same or a little better.
before that i actually used artic silver the heat sink and since then my cpu temp dropped under 60c often (right around 59c when under normal load).
Yup, mine too. Actually I’ve been playing with the power management.
Changing the CPU Fan Control changes the range of CPU speed.
Mine goes 266, 300 and 400mhz on Level 2 on battery.
When I set it to Level 1 (quiet) it’s the same thing. It all applies the settings
after a good restart. That’s how it worked for me.
