As some may know, I bought a Vaio TX790P for only $460 with a white band going down near the middle of the screen but it was still mostly usable. But just today in the afternoon while I was using it in the computer lab, I closed the lid normally while using the lab computer and after a few minutes of opening up the lid to my horror, there was a crack down the bottom right corner of the screen and now all of the screen is unusable.

Its just a complete mess of horizontal and some vertical lines and pushing the LCD in some places does cause them to move around a lot. the vertical band which was on the LCD when I bought the notebook a month ago doesn’t change at all however. The screen is totally unusuable, just a complete mess of vertical lines everywhere and the crack.  Maybe I should take a picture?

I guess I will have to replace the LCD and its so expensive even though I paid so little for the notebook. But still, how did it happen just by me closing and opening the lid normally? I though the LCD was sturdier in this model due to the carbon fiber lid!? All I FUCKING did was close and open the lid like I always do!  :evil:  :x :x

I am a bit upset right now and really don’t know if I could trust another Sony ultraportable, especially the Vaio TX. Now I have to go back to my disgustingly large Compaq Presario V3019US :cry:  :cry:  :cry:  :cry:

Anyone know the best price to get a TX LCD replacement? All I know is that the model number for it is either LTD111EXCX or LTD111EXCY. What are the differences between these two? Anyone know where I could get it especially in the Houston area? I already talked to Screentekinc/LCDs4Less which is based in Houston and they don’t have it in stock.

I just can’t beleive it cracked when all I did was close and open the lid like normal. WTF!?!?!?!? Sigh…....... :(

Maybe it’s been there since you got the laptop.  Since you posted you have a LCD problem when you bought it.  Just got worse overtime, and maybe when you close this time, you closed it a bit harder than usual.  Unless your lab is somewhat pressurized like underground or too cold then that might be the magic/culprit.  The LCD just snapped.

Anyway Sony Direct has them in stock for $519, just search for this Accessory Number A1178395A.  And as for the model number difference I think they are the same it’s just that LTD111EXCX old and LTD111EXCY is new.  If you search for this Accessory Number A1154930A (I’m guessing it’s LTD111EXCX), you’ll see the note from Sony.

Part# A1149391A has been discontinued. This is the replacement part.

And if you go here You’ll see that even the TX650’s uses the latest LCD replacement. 

My best bet is to sell your White PSP and 50 games or your Compaq and get the LCD screen.  Like I mention on previous post why I don’t like the TX is because it’s so thin that you can easily break the LCD.  Unfortunate for the SZ owners who has it 13.3” with the thin screen version, man! I can’t imagine the amount of protecting it.  It’s the matter of how you take care of your laptop.  Beauty comes with its price, but I don’t necessarily mean it bad. Now I’ve come to like my TX over the T250P.  My Mom has it now.  :D

And here’s a tip for you Rahul, and to TX owners out there.  Buy a cleaning cloth for PC screen/monitor and cut it the size of the entire TX LCD.  And use it to bridge the gap of your keyboard and screen when closed, before you put it on your bag or sleeve.  Trust me this will help you 2 ways. First you have a cleaning cloth handy (all the time) to clean your screen, second, it’ll protect your your screen from keyboard smudges and possibly breakage, because of the TX super thin design.  :idea:

Sorry I think I confused you from somebody else.  But if this is your list   Then bulls eye. 

Anyway TX is great if you know how to take care of it.
The TX is faster, thinner and lighter than the TRs and Ts.  8)

Well, I really only got the TX because of its cheap price. I personally like the T series most of all out of the TR, T and TX.

Didn’t you say you had some weird spots on your screen at maximum brightness?

Its a shame how expensive the screen is, even though I only paid $460 for the notebook, I’m still so poor!  :(
There’s a guy thinking about trading his Vaio TR2 for my PSP and its games, I hope he accepts it. I guess I’ll use that and decide to get my TX790P fixed or not.

As I said before, all I did was use it in the computer lab and just close the lid while it was cleaning the registry and then I opened it up and discovered the horrible crack and the entire screen is screwed, just a whole mess of vertical and horizontal lines and fuzziness, looks pretty cool actually.

I wish there was a way to repair cracked screens. Why are LCDs the most expensive part in a notebook but also the most fragile?

How much do you think I’d get for it with the bad screen if I decided to sell it?  What do you think I should do with it? :cry:

Yup I still have the white spots.  I can only see it at an angle though, I can still live with it.  I am considering buying the replacement screen.  But I’m on the same boat as you.  It is expensive.

That’s a good deal if someone is willing to trade his TR with your PSP and games. TR>PSP

If I were you keep it and when you get the money fix your LCD.
But if you have the TR from your friend,
then choose whether you sell the TR for
the TX screen or sell the TX with the bad screen.

I might be interested get it off your hands if you give me a good price.
That is with the bad TX screen still intact.

The TX790P works just fine except the screen is just completely unusable, its just a complete mess of lines and blobs, looks really cool though. If I push on the back of the screen a bit, I can still clearly see a bit of the right side of the LCD, otherwise, its very fuzzy and the left side is just full of vertical lines.
Still outputs to an external monitor no problem.
I would like to get it fixed but with the expensive screen….

Well just plug it in a monitor screen for now.
Hey could you do me a favor and check what company/brand is it made of :?:
I mean the 1.5Gb RAM that is installed in your TX790.

Just a “counterpoint”.

I wouldn’t necessarily blame it on the TX in this case. When you’re getting a notebook for nearly 1/5 of it’s actual price then you should expect there would be problems. If you had purchased one new (or at least from an authorized location) you would be covered under warranty and this would be a non-issue. Laptop warranties are worth it.

Well, I know that the standard 1 year warranty is still in effect on the computer. Do you think Sony would fix it or no? I hear always bad stories about Sony’s service and highly doubt they’d fix this under warranty or what?

Because I paid so little for it, I don’t think that means my TX had inferior build quality of other TXs.

I agree with Archival, I love the TX.  So much so that I have four of them right now, but only two are in great working condition.  The other two I bought off ebay that people dropped.  I’m just tinkering with those for fun.

I haven’t found the TX too fragile.  I treat it just like my TR.  I slam the screen down everynight, and pick it up by the corner from under my bed, knock on wood :D

For the TX790 for $460, thats a steal, even if you have to spend $520 for the screen.  The screens used to be $600, so they dropped a little.

same here.. lol i abuse my tx like any laptop slamming the screen and my brief case handling is aggressive and it still management to survive, knock on wood.  LOL

Regarding Archival’s recommendation of putting a cloth between the keyboard and the screen, I think that is a good idea, but for a different reason.  Having been through 6 or 7 tx’s now, I have noticed that of them have small scratches on the screens (noticeable when the screen is off, but you can’t see them when the screen is on).  Anyway, I believe that is due to contact with the keys of the keyboard.  Since the screen and screen casing are more flexible, pressure in the middle of the casing will cause contact between the screen and the keyboard.
