Can anyone help.  I have an X505 VP and it has little software - a simple set up for travelling - Microsoft Office, mcAfee virus checker, spybot.

It worked fine until a few months ago when it refused to closedown.  This seems to prevent it from properly installing some XP and Office updates as it effectively locks up half way through the install if a restart is required.  I can restore to an old restore point and manually reupdate one by one but I can’t identify the problem update.  This may be an XP or Office problem but my other heavy laptop and desktops (not Sony) are all fine.

Anyone else had this problem?

I used to have a similar issue with an old desktop but I’m afraid it was too long ago for me to remember the solution.  The following link might help.

Thanks, I was hopeful but it didn’t work

It still does the same thing, goes to a blue windows “windows i sshutting down"screen and the hard disk light flashes intermittently as if it is trying to do something but it just never closes.
