It just started clicking a few minutes ago. After 3.5 years of travelling with my TR1, I think I’m doing pretty well.

Currently I have the Toshiba MK3004 (30 GB). Looking around, I see the MK6006GAH (60GB) is out there. Is there anything else with more capacity?

Do I need to pay attention to anything else, other than 1.8” and Toshiba?

After looking around, I found out some stuff. This is a page which shows all the 1.8” models available in Germany, for example:

However, I don’t know which of these two to get:
Toshiba MK6006GAH 60GB
Toshiba MK6008GAH 60GB ZIF

Which is the right one? And what is a ZIF connection? I Googled it, but it doesn’t tell me if I need it or not. I would appreciate any advice!

If I remember correctly, there’s only one variant of MK6006GAH and the MK6008GAH is the one that has a ZIF connector. I believe the Toshiba’s ZIF connector is similar to those of Hitachi’s HDD interface ribbon cable. I think it should look something like this:

Anyhow, ZIF is simply an acronym for Zero Insertion Force; which means a device can be inserted into a socket with no resistance.

For your reference, the MK6006GAH use this sort of connector:

By the way, the latest Toshiba 1.8” HDD is the 80GB HDD is the 80GB MK8007GAH.

thanks for the info, you’re absolutely right. The 80 GB model you mentioned is also listed on the page for which I provided the link.

The only thing unclear to me is whether or not I need to get the ZIF model or if the regular model without it will do.

It all depends on the type of HDD connector employed by your PCG-TR1; and the only way to find out is to open your TR1.

IIRC, the connector depends on whether or not one has the Toshiba or Hitachi drive. I have the Toshiba drive in my TR1MP. Does that help?

I think it’s safe to assume that your TR1MP does not employ ther ZIF connector. Thus, the MK6006GAH would be ideal if you decide to go 60GB.
