What have you been using for your TR?

I currently have a Thinkpad without a wireless connection and I have a TR3AP3 that is arriving any day.

I want to get a wireless router that I can use the TR for and so that I can also keepy my Thinkpad wired to for my roommate to use.

I have a cable/dsl connection at home now.

Should I get Netgear, Linsky, Belkin, D-link?

yup, linksys is the best…i had a belkin for sometime..it was terrible…it needed to be reset on a regular basis..but the linksys wireless g works great !!

Linksys all the way. If you get the 54g you can upgrade the firmware and run a VPN for free!

I won’t say avoid Linksys in general (they are now essentially Cisco’s consumer division) but avoid the BEFW11S4 router. Even the latest firmware rev is crap.

where do you get this firmware to run the vpn for free?  if you do run a vpn for free what does that mean, you can get on your network where ever you are on anyones computer?

This has always been a sticky issue for me….

Do you really want to use “hacked” firmware to increase your security (i.e. using a VPN)?  I would not be so sure….  It is like going to a warez/hacking site to download a patched version of firewall or anti trojan software.  It could kind of defeat its purpose, right?

Additionally, if you have the *need* to run a VPN (not for the fun of learning, but the need to use it), are you telling me that you don’t have a machine to act as a VPN server behind your router?  Any WinNT, Win2k, etc would do it.  The OS even includes all the soft you need.

Marcelo, you make a good point. Also, I wonder how well this “free VPN” feature compares to Linksys’ WRV54G product that has VPN features. I doubt that the “free VPN” has the same functionality as the more full featured WRV54G. And yes, if you really need a VPN (not just for playing around with it) I would think that a person would go with a more robust solution.

However, it may be good enough for some…so, to each his own…
