I have a TR1A. I find the sound acts strange. Specifically, when there is a loud short sound (drum beat, explosion), the overall volume seems to drop afterwards. It is almost like there is a limiter on the volume that is triggered for a few seconds after a loud sound.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Do you have Bass Boost enabled? To check, go to the Sony Notebook Setup in the control panels. Click on the Bass Boost tab and see if it’s enabled. For some reason, the Bass Boost seems to be quirky making the sound go lower. Turning it off seems to fix the problem.

Bass Boost was on. I turned it off. I can’t test right now due to quiet environment. But I will try later. Thanks for the tip.

Also, it is interesting that Bass Boost doesn’t seem to appear on any screen if you go through Control Panel / Sound, Speech and Audio Devices. I wouldn’t have found it if you hadn’t said to look in Sony Notebook Setup.

so what was this feature supposed to do…i turned mine off as well to correct the same problem a few days after purchase.  btw, do we have dolby nr headphone jack like the fujitsu? is this bass boost thing the same as sony megabass?  thx

Yeah, BassBoost is essentially MegaBASS for your TR.  For some reason, it doesn’t seem to work that well. On my old Sony SR, BassBoost seemed to work a lot better. I suspect it’s a driver issue.

I just found out that Bass Boost can be toggled simply by using the Fn+B key combination!

Is there a list somewhere of all the Fn key combinations? I mean, I can see the icons for some Fn keys like Muting (Fn+F3), Volume (Fn+F4), and Brightness (Fn+F5). But I never would have guessed Fn+B was Bass Boost—nothing is printed on the key.

The only other one I figured out is Fn+E = Eject the DVD/CD drive.

that’s pretty cool.  i guess if they tried to print all this on the keys it would look kinda messy, but i wonder if it’s all buried in the help somewhere…they need an FN+F1 for help on shortcuts….
