So,  my new toy arrives in a couple of days time, my VGN-X505VP.  I am really looking forward to it, however I want to change the HDD for a 40Gb unit, I have my screwdriver on order to take the X505 to bits, and now I just need to get the HDD ordered up.

However I am having difficulty tracking down the required HDD, particularly as I live in the UK.  Does anybody know where to find one?

I have a Hitachi 1.8” HDD, but I beleive the Toshiba have the IDE connector on the end of the drive, while Hitachi put it on the side, therefore making my Hitachi incompatible?  So I’m now looking for any compatible 40Gb drive, or even a 30Gb.

Yeah…I am also waiting for some useful hint regarding any 40 gb compatible with x505.Where to buy it(internationally)?

They both have different interface connectors. MK4007GAL uses ATA type 50pin whereas MK4009GAL uses ZIF-40 type. I believe the X505 is only compatible with the ATA type 50pin.

Are you interested by an original MK2004GAL?

No I’m more interested in the MK1231GAL (120Gb single platter) but it seems that SPAN only sells this as ZIF and that the PATA version is discontinued, even though both ZIF and PATA were available from launch (in September?). I’m waiting for Toshiba’s response to this.

Edit: Toshiba has responded and confirmed that the MK1231GAL is discontinued and other drives have been replaced by ZIF.
