I was actually thinking of getting another Dell this one. Then buying the next round of UMPC either UX or OQO 02 maybe. But not sure.
I have dells in the past and they have been ok. Sony support with the extended warranty has been kick ass! They do not actually work for Sony they are sub contracted out and work on Dells as well. So you cannot lose if you buy the warranties in my mind.
Dell screens are pathetic compared to Sonys. I looked at the xps 1210 (UAO screen) and it is bright but viewing angles are horrible and it looks very bad compared to my TX screen. Try before you buy or least look at the numerous posts at http://www.notebookforums.com regarding this in the “Dell under 15” notebooks” and read for yourself what XPS m1210 owners are saying. Tempting piece of machinery, but note quite ready for prime time.
Tilt your screen up and down or walk from side to side and see what I am talking about. I had a 700 for a few weeks before sending it back. Some Dell’s may seem bright due to a prism technology used by AUO. However, this creates many other compromises. Also, what is up with all of the ripples from the reflective clear coat on both the 700 and the 1210. It is if it was sprayed on. Others have commented upon this as well. Oh well, at least with your 700, you do not get shocked like on the SZ I have owed several models of both manufacturers over the years and I feel Sony’s have always been significantly better. You probably will not find many to disagree with this if you ask around. In particular, I really enjoy the brightness of the new LED screens. Colors may be off slightly (like the Dell 700 favoring blue (AUO screen) or green (Samsung screen), but the screen is very crisp and bright. Put the same wallpaper on both and check.
Excellent point! LED Sony’s are ridiculous in price (SZ260, TX). Given time they will come down in price (well, maybe NOT from Sony). Actually, the XPS is also ridiculously expensive when I configured it. Dell’s many coupons help though. Wish Sony would coupon us to death with an additional a 30% off like Dell does at the end of each quarter.
