I will never buy another Dell and I always caution people against buying them. You get what you pay for. My company used to buy about $60k worth of hardware per year. About 3 years ago or so, problems with the machines skyrocketed, particularly with motherboards and power supplies. At the same time their customer service went to shit. It took us four service visits to get one of our workstations working properly and that was after two weeks of trying to convince Dell there was a problem and that they should send someone out. We’ve now standardized on HP/Compaqs and never looked back.
In support of the topic starter, I actually like this notebook a lot and so do many of its users, haven’t heard any build quality problems from this model as of yet. It is quite a nice machine, very nice. A big bigger, thicker and heavier than the TX but at the same price, you get a hell of a lot more, it makes a decent gaming machine as well.
Its quite a popular notebook, getting high praises and it deserves them.

I guess you work for dell… or you have no discernment… Every Dell craptop I’ve used has been hopeless, but not as bad as their deskflops.
Specs are one thing and Dell always has nice specs on paper. They thing that you don’t get from Dell is fit and finish. In general, there’s a certain amount of polish missing on Dell notebooks. They tend to feel like they’re “good enough” and lack the panache you find on Sony or Apple products.
Dell will always win on price since they have such a large buying power advantage and they fact that they’re a JIT type operation who’s sole purpose is to move product and inventory. For people who are simply satisfied with “good enough” (which is A LOT of people…especially in the US) then Dells usually fit the bill.
Dell shares have tanked over the last year - and their sales are down too, this refelects the American publics grasp of “you get what you pay for” so they’ve wised up and moved on.
nice specs as is often the case for Dell’s, but as Groovy said, Dell’s are definately unpolished on the style side, as is the case with pretty much every maker of notebooks outside of Sony and Apple.
looks to me like everyone is having a go at copying the TR, well all i can say is Dell have buggered up on the poor design, they’ve indeed packed it with a high spec, but these features are add-ons, the shear beauty to the tr was the fact that when we bought it, we knew what we were getting as standard. Quite a few large pc companies have had a go at making a replica but i have to say, Dell should do more homework, and dont forget the TR’s shell is pure magnesium, none of this plastic crap which warps in the heat, and yes, Dell are renowned for faults, just a few weeks ago one of their laptops exploded into a ball of flames during a chinese conference which i think was at the embassy, im not sure, but im glad to say, stick with design and quality, no body can compete with sony, they’ve been on the Vaio market too long, they’re still the daddies of portable computing 8)
true, but the one thing i want to point out is sony doesnt care about selling value computers, their market plan is to create and innovate, they care more about releasing something never seen before, i.e. aibo the entertainment robot, the first true media at home style pc, these are the big guys, competition is for jealousy, whilst innovating is the way to create fear for other companies, the next best step is the playstation 3, they will lose money on the sales, but they knew this, because all in all, theyve created yet another product that no one can compete with. Dell is Present, but Sony is the future 8)
[quote author=“everbrave”]anyway, one should compare this Dell with the SZ series not the TR. Well, the result of this comparision is obvious!
The SZ is larger than the 1210 - I know it only seems a little bigger, but in practice it makes a difference in usabilty e.g. on an airplane where I spend a lot of time.
I have had a TR, then the Dell i710 (predecessor to this 1210), and now an SZ. The Dell was 1/2 the price of either of the Sonys, and was a nice machine - less style, but a beautiful screen, pleasant keyboard - basically it worked great. Given the price difference, I would have bought a 1210 instead of the SZ had it been available at the time.
Dell’s service also worked better for me than Sony’s. For example, when I lost one of the little rubber feet off the Dell, the sent me an whole set of them. This just happened to my SZ and Sony would only send me replacements for the ones I had lost - NOT the loose one that was about to fall off.
I guess you work for dell… or you have no discernment… Every Dell craptop I’ve used has been hopeless, but not as bad as their deskflops.
No need to be so mean dude.
Well, I hear so many bad reports of Dells but the few Dell desktop and notebooks I’ve gotten to use have seemed quite solid and well built, of course they lack the style and sexiness of a Vaio but you don’t see many college students without any income getting a Vaio now do you?
I don’t have experience on DELL’s quality issue. but i am disappointed at SONY’s arrogance and stuborn:
1) they get rid of Bluetooth in NA market;
2) take a look at the DVD issue , which drives me crazy. my DVD drive has been dead right after i purchased my laptop. in fact, the firmware update was downloaded from sony website.
3) SONY always comes up with its own, closed standard to charge more and to manipulate the customer. if most people use SD card, they use MemoryStick; a lot of other examples
in all, DELL’s customer service is better than SONY.

Are you referring to a particular model (i.e. TR)? Bluetooth is available on a number of Sony systems (S, SZ, T, TX, U) so that statement isn’t necessarily correct.
3) SONY always comes up with its own, closed standard to charge more and to manipulate the customer. if most people use SD card, they use MemoryStick; a lot of other examples
This is more or less true. A lot of market leaders tend to do this. Heck, look at Apple and the iPod. It’s a totally proprietary/closed system. Of course, it’s designed pretty well so no one complains…except the French. I don’t always approve but in some cases there is a reasonable technical reason why. FWIW, at least Sony is learning and supporting SD cards now directly. That’s got to count for something.
in all, DELL’s customer service is better than SONY.
I would say this is probably true on average. I’ve had both good and bad experiences with both but it really depends on what product you have and the problems you’re having. I would rate Sony Computer Service as above average but Sony Consumer Electronics Services as barely acceptable.
