When I start my TR1MP, I get the message “Operating System not found”. The recovery disk does not help. Any ideas?

Press F2 at the VAIO Logo (POST) and see what the BIOS reports.

Is the drive recognized at all?
Is it recognised with an incorrect capacity?

If no to both, you likely have a failed hard disk drive.

If you’ve got an external floppy drive (USB) you can download diagnostic software (diskette image) from the disk manufacturers website.

Boot by diskette and see what the diagnostic software tells you about the hard disk.

Both Toshiba and Hitachi drives are used in that model (with a different connector cable).

Because you cannot boot the system to look at Device Manager to see what’s installed, the only way to find out would be to crack the case and have a look.

Search around here on the forum. There are numerous threads discussing replacement of the hard disk in the TR line, including which models of Toshiba/Hitachi 1.8” hard disks are compatible. Some even have pictures.

You’ll want to go with the same manufacturer because the connector on the Toshiba is on the end of the drive, where the connector on the Hitachi is one the side (they’re not compatible).
