[quote author=“sleidia”]Thanks, topbanana.
Unfortunanely, the FireWire drive I intend to buy needs 5V power. It’s the PikaOne Flycase ( http://www.pikaone.com/en/products/flycaseSlim_silver_combo.htm )
So, for outdoor use, I guess I will have to use one of the USB 1.1 ports since a 15v output seems to be too strong for this device. Am I right?
That’s a bugger isn’t it.
Bear in mind that some of the drive enclosures are better at handelling the start-up power needed by the drive than others…
my new hdd enclosures can’t start one of my drives which used to start perfectly in my transcend hdd enclosure… that’s really annoying. fooling it is easy, you can plug a piggyback usb power take-off cable into the usb port, then plug the usb data cable into that and plug them both into the drive. so the drive is still only getting the power from one USB socket, but likes to have it coming in on both inputs… Hmmm.
Those drives and enclosures work perfectly with the new firewire cable i made up… the 15V does the trick.
Firewire standards say the the power thru a 6-pin cable can be from 8 to 30V…
Cheers
