Hi everyone. I know that keyboard wear, where the keys become shiny and glossy after regular use, is inevitable and perfectly normal. But I’d still like to prevent that and keep my keys textured and looking brand new. The keys on my HP DV4000 got all shiny and smooth after only 1.5 months of use. The letters were still there but the keys looked shiny and worn down and it bothers somebody like me. They also felt different, which I did not like.

Is there anyway to prevent this? Would putting a keyboard skin help? I think that the finger oils on our fingers rub away at the coating on the keys or something like that and was wondering if a keyboard skin or even saran wrap would prevent that. Call me crazy, but I just hate that wear on the keys!

I doubt there’s any practical means of preventing this outside of some sort of skin, whic would probably be annoying.  If it’s not too cost prohibitive, maybe you shuold get some spare keyboards.

Do you really think a keyboard skin would prevent normal wear? I know it’l protect against crumbs, liquids, dust, etc, but would it from wear? I just want my keyboard and keys to look and feel brand new for 2 years before I dump my lappy. 

You’re probably best off with one of those keyboard skins in terms of keeping your finger oil off your keyboard. It’s the oil (and friction) that wears down the keyboard. There’s not much you can do about it.

You can also order another keyboard in two years to “refresh” your notebook.  :wink:

Well, then it looks like a keyboard skin should fully prevent the wear then am I right as my finger oil wouldn’t get on the keys and my fingers themselves won’t be rubbing off on the keys right?

When your old keyboard gets all yucky, it’s just time for a new laptop. Sony will have a great new model by then. 

Or you can just buy another keyboard from Sony, it’s less than 60 bucks for laptops.  Plus it’s easy to install.. just find out where to fry it open.  Or you can just be carefully not to type much and just buy an external keyboard. usually it gets shiny and glossy when you type too much or you play online games with it.  :D

Pssh, my keys have already gotten shiny looking after only a WEEK of use!!!  :evil:

Whatever, I’ll just get used to it I suppose….better than having a stuck pixel or some other imperfection…

Exfoliate your hands so they’re not so abrasive and keep a box of moist towelletes near your laptop to keep your hands and oil free when you’re using the system.
