Well, I have taked this TR apart so many times, the cable finally gave out:
and i am wondering if anyone has an idea on how to repair. I am thinking of using the link in this forum to nexttronics to order a new one, but i am not sure when or if they can get to Nepal.
so i am thinking of snipping off the bad end but i don’t know how to strip the plastic off the contacts, or is this impossible? Ideas? thanks!!!

ps. this is all related to my No OS found problem. I have the drive out and was planning to put in an apple ipod one to test, but now i cant get power because of the pins on the cable, well, at least that’s what i hope it is. the cable is only 8 usd…phew…
You can fix it if it still has enough length for your connections.
As on your picture, lower end may need to fix. You may cut off the end at crease and then use a small thin knife and sharp such as some paper knife with removable sharp blade and gentlely scratch the new end you just cut to show up wires. I did this some time and it will be in good working.

Good luck.
thanks, but i think the cable’s shot unless something else is amiss. any idea how to test without the cable? also, i am pretty sure the drives don’t need to be plugged in to power up, but what about the touchpad/panel lights (also on the power controller board)?
thanks!!!

[quote author=“kaotic504”]if you’re still interested and that’s the ribbon cable for the touchpad, then i might have a spare one. but i’m located in the US.
yes, that’s the one. i do have an address in washington DC (a friend) that can diplomatic pouch the cable to me).would u be willing to part with it? just let me know here and i can PM u the address in DC….thanks!!!

[quote author=“tifosiv122”]You think the notebook wont power up because of a missing touchpad cable?
Erik
That’s not really the touchpad cable, but it is the cable that connects the touchpad, front lights, power button to the motherboard, so I am thinking yes. What do you think Tifo? I see no other way to power up the laptop, do you? thanks!!!

Gotcha. I honestly don’t remember the TR open, it’s been well over a year and a half since I’ve seen it. My old notebook had a similar cable but it only controlled the touchpad. Once I forgot to re-hook it up and it booted fine but I didn’t have a mouse. Obviously since this controls more then just the mouse, it makes sense that it won’t boot.

I don’t think this is right. I think it just has the lights (not the actual power control) and the touchpad. So the lights wouldn’t go on, the mouse wouldn’t work but it would still boot. I might be wrong; never tried booting without it.

Chris,
Jiggy says it controls the power button, if it does, it makes sense, if it doesn’t then as I said before I think it should boot.

Oh erk, does it? I thought the power button was nowhere near there. Though thinking about it it must be connected somewhere…
I’ll, erm, get my coat.
Chris
I have no idea…I’m relying on what Jiggy said…like I said before I haven’t opened the TR in over a year and I half, I don’t remember what it looks like inside.

As you said, you got No OS system found and after you do a HDD test you got no power at all.
As I know, power sw connected to a daughter board of memory stick slot, bluetooth, touchpad and leds. This board connected to motherboard through 30pin flexible flat cable, the one you are suppose to your problem.
I think, you first fix cable to test if your TR is power up to make sure problem is cause by cable. This way will shorten the length of cable but you can take out daughter board to get it connected to motherboard.
If you have multimeter, you can check what pins is power switch pins and check that pins in cable if it is cut off.
Some advises
hi all, thanks for your help. The cable does come from the daughterboard that houses the memstick and passes on the signal from the power button, so without that cable i don’t see a way of powering this beast up unless i had a schematic. i wonder if the cable just passes a signal from the power button. heck if i know. but i need a cable, the one i have is now too short and unrepairable. thanks!!
jigs
I Agree, theres definately no way to power it on. The cable controls the power button, the touch pad, the lights and maybe the network card and the memory stick. Sony parts emailed me a schematic once for parts ordering. Maybe try that.
