Hey, every time a couple months go by I forget my password, this is like my third user name on this site.

Anyways, I have this 40gb Ipod that I basically never use.  I was thinking, there has got to be some way I can put the hard drive inside the carrige of the TR and have two hard drives.  I was thinking perhaps that I could fit it in the pcmcia slot (or take the pcmcia stuff out to make more room). 

Obviously I would have to strip the ipod down, but is it possible to get it small enough?  How big are the necessary components if I was willing to let a usb cord dangle out of the pcmcia hole and just plug it into the usb when I wanted to activate the hard drive.

anyways, I was just thinking… any other suggestions for ways to make use of this stupid ipod hard drive would be great.

I think you would have trouble fiitting a few cigarette papers inside the casing of a TR.

Why not buy an external case for the HDD. I admit I do not know if an Ipod HDD is smaller than a 2.5” drive, but if it is I think you would have a better chance of modding the external case to suit than fitting the HDD inside the TR.

there’s no room..and if there was, it’d just add heat to a something that’s already filled with heat

your most elegant solution is to just configure your IPOD to be used entirely as a hard drive if you’re not happy with the music playing part of it.

If you want another hard drive in your TR your best change would be a PCMCIA HD.

Even if you could do this…you would run into the huge problem of how/where would you plug the hard disk into the system. The motherboard has two connectors of which both are being used as masters. To my knowledge, there are no special IDE cables available that would connect 3 spindles.

I was thinking that I could potentially use the usb port next to the pcmcia. 

The ipod does not run on battery when plugged into the USB, so perhaps I could get rid of the battery, casing, lcd, etc… and just keep the basic “brains” that operate the ipod, and it might still interface with the computer the same way it does now.

Not sure how much space those brains take up, but perhaps, if needed, something could be removed from the TR. (phone line and ethernet cable port?)

Are you sure there is no ide cable that would let me daisy the ipod drive as a slave?

And, how about this longshot idea:

could I devise some way to be able quickly physically swap whether the DVD or the Ipod is connected to the second master?  I only occasionally use the DVD, and could stomach a restart when I needed it.

I think you’re making a proverbial mountain out of a molehill here. You basically have two choices: use the iPod as-is (which isn’t a bad choice) or get a 1.8” hard drive enclosure. The model mentioned on other threads is USB-powered.

If you really want a mindfuck, open up both the TR and the iPod and swap drives just for the hell of it while you’re at it. (assuming they’re the same brand) This is best done on the roof during a lightning storm screaming “it’s alive!” when you’re finished. :wink:

Is this true? I suspect you maaaaaybe could if you removed the CD drive, as the M/B connector is the same for the HD and CD. Not sure where you’d power it from, mind you.
