If you guys could have a dream laptop where one of the major companies came upto you Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic etc and told you that they would make a laptop with whatever you wanted on it, what would you have? It would be a laptop which would last you to at least 2010 or beyond. You can go into as much or as little detail as you like.

I have outlined a dream laptop for me below:

Intel Core Duo Processor 4.4GHz
4 GB RAM
500 GB Hard Drive
Double Layer DVD-RW
7MP Camera
Bluetooth
12’ screen

Just look at how much laptops have changed five years ago since early 2001. Even with those specs, you’re computer will still most likely be outdated in another five years. I mean, you only put a double layer DVD burner, what about a blue-ray and or/ HD-DVD burner at least?  :?

All I know is that my dream computer would have the form factor of the T or TX series with an utterly massive hard drive, at least 1 terabyte, a graphics card used in desktops or desktop replacements, at least 5 gigs of ram, made of some very advanced material. It would never, ever get hot, it would always be cool to the touch, built so tough that a bullet would only cause a scratch on it and never ever create any heat or fan noise, it would be completely silent all the time and be under 3 pounds. It would also last a couple of days straight on one battery charge and have a built in microphone and webcam with an optical drive that can burn and read every type of optical media out there, from cds, to blu-ray discs.
Thats all I got right now….

I entirely agree: The form factor of the new TX, with 11,1 inch screen and and good keyboard (with a decent right shift key) such a light weight - and not the last: such a beatiful design, would also indeed be my preferred design for a future dream model. I think the man-machine interface is crucial for me: Screen, keyboard, weight, exciting color choices (included the whiteish) and size, and indeed an elegant form.

Im quite satisfied with progress on all fronts of laptop development. As a gadget freak, i know for sure that processor speeds’ pretty much getting there and so is hard disk size. My only concern is the battery stamina. More power on the go and hours or may be even surviving days without charge, is something im looking forward to.

I wonder why Sony never made a widescreen X505? They discontinued it right, does anyone know why?

Oh wait, I’d actually like to have my dream laptop as thin as the X505. And to solve its lack of an optical drive, you just hold an optical disc near an advanced sensor located on a side of the notebook and it’ll automatically record all the information into its very large flash memory and it’ll be like the disc is in your optical drive and it’ll be automatically erased when you want to “scan” another disc. 

Oh yeah, speaking of flash memory, I want my hard disc to be entirely composed of flash memory. The minute I press the power button, Windows or whatever OS I want to use is fully ready for use in less than ten seconds.  :D

If the new SZ could be thinned down some, it pretty much hits the mark for me…I like the smaller form-factor of the TR/T/TX line, but the keyboard and screen size are just a tad under what i’m comfortable with…so the S/SZ line has always appealed to me…

I would add the following to the SZ, if it were me…and it would be a near perfect dream laptop for me…

1.  pre-N wifi, w/ capability to go to the standardized N once products are available.  this is really impossible though since there are no pre-N minipci cards…to bad…

2.  bluetooth 2.0 (if it isn’t already)

3.  4 and 6 pin firewire

4.  additional bay for hot swappable HD or second battery, or replace the optical bay w/ this…i never use an optical drive for anything…they are SOOOOO 90’s…

5.  integrated flash memory for all the formats, not just memory stick

6.  secondary booting capability to a lite non-windows OS for web surfing and playing media on the HD.  basically just something for quick bootup and total safety when you are in non-secured wifi land at the airport, hotel, or hotspot.

7.  keep it at 4lbs give or take…

That’d just about do it for me…I’d be in FAT CITY…

^^ I’d be cool with an external optical drive, since I don’t use one much on my laptops anyway, especially with the compact form-factor of the pcga-dvd1 and similar Sony firewire drives.

As far as laptop innovation goes, everything seems fine, although I don’t think much progress is being made on the style front.  The Vaio’s from a couple years back are pretty cool… the r505, x505, SRX, Z and TR series look great… but beyond that, no more sexy notebooks.

Yeah, I’m really wishing that Sony would put a modular bay in their notebooks, especially their T series, since the Fujitsu Lifebook P series have em.

For me, something like an ultraportable that has an upgradeable graphics chipset and lifetime hardware warranty should do it…

Of course, this is a very far-fetched dream. *lol*
