Hi all, there’s been much discussion about whether the MK6006GAH drive from an iPod photo would work in a TR vaio (edit: mainly because of the ATA-6 rating of the MK6006GAH compared to the ATA-5 of the MK4004GAH, which it replaces).  Well, a few days ago I bought one such drive stripped from an iPod (199USD plus 12 shipping).  Right now I am writing this message from my TR3A after a 60gb transplant!  Hardware installation was a breeze and the system restore was as simple as popping in the recovery DVD and watch it do it’s thing.  More details here:

Final word: iPod 60gb hard drive works perfectly in a TR3A.

Now that I have replaced the TR3A HDD with the MK6006GAH, I have a spare 40gb HDD that I’d like to put in an enclosure and use as external HDD.  The only problem is that I am looking for an enclosure that’ll allow me to access the HDD without a need for a computer.  Such devices already exist for 2.5” drives by such companies as Bytecc,  but I’ve only found one (Dvisto by MacPower in Taiwan) that makes an enclosure with this functionality for 1.8” drives.  Unfortunately, they only sell in quantity to retailers (edit: not to mention that it’s not ready for mass production yet), which leads me to my question:  Does anyone out there know where I can get my hands on a USB/iLink hard drive enclosure with the above features?

I bought the drive, but I can’t use it yet because when I sent the TR back shortly after purchase for drive failure, they put a different kind of drive in (Hitachi?) and the interface runs along the long side instead of the short side.  I should have made sure they gave me back the cable.

Does anybody know where I can get the cable for the MK6006GAH?

I use it in my TR as well, since February.

Just out of curiosity, have you found an acceptable enclosure to fit your spare 1.8” 40GB HDD? I have a similar setup - TR5AP + MK6006GAH + BT 2.0 upgrade - but the only sleek looking enclosure I can find is this:

Ishii, I am still looking for the USB-ON-THE-GO (OTG) enclosure for the 1.8” 40gb spare toshiba hdd.  The one you’re looking at on ebay does look sleek, but is not OTG and the 40gb hdd will not fit in as it is too thick (8mm, compared to 5mm for the 20gb).  Well, the MK8007GAH is popping up in retail stores online (available in next couple of weeks), and I’m quite tempted to go for it, but probably not at the current price.  I may, however, consider selling the 40 and 60 I have right now if I can cover the cost of the 80gb:)

PS.  I like the avitar ... did you put it together?

Tempting indeed. I will likely just stick with the 60GB for now and somehow acquire the “dream” external enclosure for the spare 40GB.

will a 30 gig 2nd g ipod work too? i have a dead one in the drawer and i may also have a dead drive in my TR3 that i need to test.  Pointers to instructions on how to dismantle an Ipod is appreciated here! thanks buds,

I can’t see why the Ipod hard drive wouldn’t work.
For the price of the 80 gig hard drive, I’d just get me a small, portable external hard drive and/or move my excess data onto dvds.
