I’ve been meaning to have a go with linux for ages now and have finally bothered to get my old computer out of hiding (P333 :shock: ).

I was wondering what version of linux people would suggest trying and where to look on the net for information about how it runs, basic commands etc as I’ve drawn a blank to any sites which seem to cater for this…

Knoppix 3.2

If your computer, this old thing, has a cd rom drive then u can download the ISO from http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=knoppix

The above has most known linux distributions listed and well documented. So it’ll help u make a choice.

I’ll put a second vote in for Ubuntu, its a very easy to install and use distro (in fact my sister can use it and thats saying quite a bit).

I would recommend that you first give Linux a try by using Knoppix. Knoppix is very user friendly, and can give you a godd idea of what to expect from Linux should you decide to install it.
Once you decide to install Linux… I would recommend going with the “father” of the 2 distributions mentioned here—Debian. Granted it isn’t constantly being moved from one version to the next like Ubuntu, but its rock solid and has a very good user base behind it. Besides… once you go apt (you’ll understand later) - you won’t want to ever use another package manager. :drool:

I was wondering which distribution you recommend for a Sony S. In fact, I try Unbuntu LiveCD, but it didn’t work. The boot stuck on PCI card initialization (maybe the problem is related with PCI Express and NVidia video card).

So I was wondering if anybody manage to use a linux distribution with the SONY S.

Also, is there more chances to be able to boot on usb key with the S. I make a search to find information about it, but I get no clue. In fact, I know it’s not possible on the TR, but I was wondering since the S is more recent, if its get this feature.

I have a T2XP, and could not find out how to boot from the usb key… it looks like it’s not possible.. maybe we need to upgrade the BIOS firmware..

Disable “External Amplifier” in kmix (or whatever audio mixer you’re using in Gnome) and make sure “Accoustic Scanning” is disabled in kwifimanager (or whatever wifi soft you’re using in Gnome).
