[quote author=“linc”]need to find the orginization that assigns IP addresses to ISP’s, then go to that ISP and use thier ARP table to find the MAC address
Three words for you: Good fucking luck. MAC addresses aren’t broadcast over the internet like IP addresses are. Otherwise, everyone would have an ARP table of millions of records. If by some miracle you found the ISP, they won’t exactly hand over info on this guy. They need a warrant. That’s why the RIAA has been suing IP addresses as of late.

sure no one is going to go through all that hassle just to track down a stolen laptop. i was simply implying that it’s not entirely impossible..
Actualy, the MAC address is embeded into the hardware or in some instances, into the firmware of the networking device. That is not to say that it can’t be cloned . In fact, most current hardware (routers, NICs, etc) have a cloning facility to allow to “fake” any MAC address you want.
[quote author=“Wadham”]Surely if it’s been stolen from a locked room, then the hotel should assume responsibility?
It’s a sad world we live in if this isn’t the case - what’s the point of locks then?
Really sorry to hear about the theft, and I hope you can get some recompense from the hotelier.
Most of them proclaim loud and long, along with printed notices, that they are not responsible for valuables left in their rooms. I think some of the better chains, while not admitting culpability, may provide some recompense.
You always have the option of having them place your TR in their vault when you go out for the day. If they argue, at least placed in the managers office. Then they are responsible.
If you do leave it in the room, tucking your TR away might be wise. Since they clean with the door open, even those so inclined don’t have a lot of time to rummage through things. I suspect both thefts were a result of a $2-3000 machine being too tempting to someone for whom it represented two, three or more months labor.
One other consideration. How often have you walked into your room while the maid was there to get something? Ever walked in while they were occupied cleaning the bath? You could take something, leave and they’d never know.
Two-way wireless security alarms for laptops consist of an alarm installed on the computer itself and a remote key-chain device. If the alarm detects movement, it first checks whether you’re nearby. If not, your key-chain remote is alerted, emitting a “chirp.” You can then choose to trigger the 110-decibel alarm on your laptop. The alarm can also be set to trigger solely on detecting motion
Really sorry to hear about your loss Mechanic, I can imagine how you are feeling, not nice at all. The reason I bought a TR1 MP, is the size, people don’t even know you are carrying a notebook. It’s so small you can hide it. The first thing I do in a hotel, is bag it up and keep in behind reception. As far as I know an insurance policy won’t pay up if its not in storage with the hotel. For short duration away from a room, I hide it, the TR is so small, you can get it in places the average maid would not think about, after all its often opportunism for a quick few quid, perhaps drugs money etc.
Its often safer to hide it in the car, I often prefer the security of my Audi A6 to a hotel, but everything’s a risk, the thing is to mitigate the risk much as possible, I recall times when I have carried the thing with me, in the cold weather we often get in the UK, it slips nicely into the inside pocket of my Barbour Northumbria!
The best thing about a TR is when I carry it in an ordinary briefcase around London, along with other expensive kit, it doesn’t look like I am carrying a laptop, not full proof, but its an advantage. I do hope it turns up, if not enjoy your new one.
Sorry about your loss .. I travel a lot and that’s one thing that freaks me out is the TR getting stolen.
How about this idea for a security measure ... we all have cameras on our TR’s why not use them to take a snapshot of the thief and email it to us?
Setup the TR to connect to any available wifi network and have a program running in the background (invisible mode in startup) that checks a website every hour for your contact info and whether to take a picture or not. If the laptop is ever stolen, you login, update your info, then the next time the program running on your TR detects an internet connection, it connects to the server and takes a picture which is emailed to you along with the IP and maybe even some keylog.

I seem to recall in the deep mists of my brain that there was some software around that did just this in case your machine ever got stolen, can’t remember - getting old
Nothing angers me more than idiots hijacking a forum for their spam. Kill them for us will you tivo.
Of course if I would have stolen the laptop (not like I would for the life of me), I’d never boot it besides putting in an OS install CD, and scrape the whole HDD.
When I buy a laptop from Ebay, which I do often, I never put it even close to being on my LAN/WAN. Who knows if it has viruses, etc? I always format the HDD and reinstall. After all it is nice having your own setup anyways.
Well that being said, a maid who stoles it might just give it to her son, who will stupidly connect to the net, etc, and will be traced.
By the way, Topic starter, did you ever get another TR, or went for something newer?
