I just installed a brand new hitachi HD for my TR3A from span.com (after the original one failed miserably :cry: )

During system recovery, i noticed a loud click…more like a clunk actually. the sound was diffrent than the numerous clicks occuring before the last hd failure. also this clunk only occurs once every 15-20mn ...?

i remember reading a thread about this..

my question is obvious: is this “normal” or is this new HD defective?

This is normal, my X505 clicks every 10-20 minutes as well, and others have reported scarce clicking as well.

hmmmm….really kind of annoying tho, my original hd never made such a sound in its 14 months of service!! these 1"8 drives are reeaally poopy..

...i searched the forum, and apparantly this could have to do with the head mounting / unmounting. there is also an app that seems to make the clunk dissapear by accessing random sectors every 5 secs. anyone try this?

Seems I remeber a posting about the Tosh v. Hitachi 1.8 drives on the TR.  If I rember correctly, the Hitachi drives clicked (more) and the Toshiba did not (or less).  I might be wrong, but I had a Tosh in my TR and now a Tosh in my T250 and neither seem to click.  I have heard the click (or clunks) you refer to on another TR in a store display, but did not see what kind of drive it had.

My Hitachi that I use for an external drive clicks like no other since day 1. Works fine so far.

mine clicks… like no tomorrow. 

hitachi failed, now i’m on a toshiba.  i use the program, it’s called silent drive.  works alright.  it’s a simple program that forces the hd to read a sector so it doesn’t park the head.

sony claims “never heard that before”

The harddrive head will never scrath the harddrive due its always spining if u make it like that so it will make ur harddrive last as long as its battery lasts. You maybe want silent drive mostly for these size hard drives since they are less sturdy with there heads parking then with ur full sized laptops and desktops.
