Hey guys,
so i got this linksys wrtp54g router with voange built in and i just moved into a new apartment building….every so often my wireless connection strenght drops down to “low” and the data trasferring stops, im programs disconect and no websites will open….then aftera few seconds it’ll fix it self and be fine…or if not i have to shut off the wireless button on my tr5 and then turn it on again..

This is really getting to be an annoying problem as sometimes it happens every two minutes or so and sometimes it goes hours without happening…do you think it’s interference from my cordless phone (also running on 2.4ghz…or do you think it’s a problem with my router? i really hope it’s not the router because 30 days have gone by and i can’t return it to best buy anymore…

Any suggestions? my router is on the floor by a bookshelf of my home entertainment unit…can the tv be causing distraction as well? i have a tiny nyc apartment so dont have many options to move stuff around…I’m willing to try switching to a 5.8.ghz cordless if that will fix the problem but i wanna make sure that is the issue first…

The wireless connection does not disconnect, it just goes down to a “low” stenght and data transfer ceases for 10 seconds-1 minute or two minutes.

Any suggestions would be welcome…I really appreciate it.  Does it sound like an interference problem to you pro’s out there? i’m wondering if i’m getting interference from a neighbors waves as well…who knows.

Are there other wireless networks near you (e.g. your neighbors)? If there are a lot then you might be having interference from the other 2.4GHz networks. Sometimes, changing the channel from 6 to 1 or 11 can help things out. Most people blindly use the default of channel 6 and enough of them in the same network can cause problems.

Inteference from 2.4GHz cordless phones and microwave ovens can also cause problems as well. Ideally, you don’t want a router on the floor. Even placing it up against a wall isn’t too ideal (although that’s what most people do). You want some amount of space so that the signals can actually travel. Does the signal drop when you’re in the same room as the router?

It may not be. I saw a study a while back where they showed that some cordless handsets had a dramatic effect on transfer rates of WiFi in the 2.4GHz range.

So what do you think is up with it just dropping to low all of a sudden? is that common sign of signal degradation and interference?...connection has still been ok since my last post and i havent’ moved the phone from the kitchen..lol…

I can get a 5.8ghz and try it out…if it fixes the problem, great, if not i’ll just return it.

I had incredible problems with my wireless connection and my 2.4GHz cordless phones.

When the phone rang I’d immediately lose my wireless connection and the only way to restore it would be to reboot both router and computer.

I replaced the phones with a 5.8GHz models and the signal stays solid.

The 2.4GHz phone in my upstairs bedroom, some 25 feet away from the router, would usually drop my connection as well.

Incidentally, my microwave is about 12 feet from the router and the signal is unaffected when I’m using it.

In a building with nearby neighbors, you may continue to suffer signal problems from their 2.4GHz phones.  My next door neighbor’s phone, some 35 feet away would occasionally knock my signal down.  Fortunately they went wireless, asked me how I solved my problem and have since replaced their cordless phone with a 5.8GHz model.
