Hi can anyone recommend a UK company that can repair the TR1MP? Or is it best to send to Sony. My hard disk died today! Won’t even boot to windows, last time it did, line accross the windows logo, and it hung there. Lights come on now, the hard disc whirrs, but no start up! Can’t boot from the recovery CD anyway. Any help appreciated

Sony repaired my laptop a few months ago. They were quite good, except that it took ages for them to get parts in. But they are expensive as hell. If the insurance had not paid for mine to be repaired I would not have bothered

Forgot to say, the process is that they charge you £12 to pick up the laptop, then they have a look and give you a quote, if you reject the quote they charge you an extra £40 and return the laptop to you, if you acept it then you just pay for the repairs

If you are sure its the hard drive then u could most probably repair it yourself, if its past the warrenty date.

Cheaper, Faster, Easier…........ 8)

You might find some issues opening the case if u haven’t done it before, but I remember I guide on this forum (somewhere) that instructs you pretty well…

As for repair…. well… I myself today have just rung Sony Vaio (UK) to repair my laptop as my TR5 has totally died, and i’m just still in warranty, but I do feel a heavy bill aproaching this New Year…. :(

Just remember that we do have a unique tiny hard drive, if you are going to repair it yourself, so check out the web for good prices (ebuyer.co.uk, etc..)

I changed my mothers HD for her, as we both have the same laptops. It’s not that hard to be frank and she’s now got an upgrade to 60GB HD, whilst i still have my original 40GB…  :evil:

Overall mate, if you got Warranty.. Use It…

Thanks for the reply guys, the reason my TR wouldn’t start was due to a faulty memory module, it had been in for over a year, not sure why it failed! When I took the memory upgrade out, it started no problem.

I viewed the instructions on the forum, and was prepared with tiny screwdriver to replace the hard drive myself; pleased I don’t have to now. Then again how long will the TR drive last?? It seams to vary from reports on the forum.

I have not long bought a TX1XP, as I thought my TR was dead! I have been sure to take the Sony 3 year warranty with the TX! I expect the tiny hard drive in the TX will be more efficient….
