Hi all,

hope someone hears my cry… I recently had an unfortunate small drop with my Sony TR5 and a week later it has totally stop working…. :cry:  :cry:  :cry:
I come here for advice on what to do next… :wink:

To cut a long story short, my niece knocked my Vaio off the sofa to the floor, I check it out and it was still on and working just fine.
But by this softy greyish plastic around the power button it had bent out of place…

The main thing at the time was, it still worked..!!

I found over the next few days that the power button felt a little lose and did always react to my pushes. Until 7days later I found it not responding to MY VAIO POWER CALLS AT ALL:evil:

So I got a maginfying glass and noticed that 1 of the two tiny electric wires (cables - I think it was white… lol) had come apart from the tiny power button board inside.

I know the power button part is connected by these 2 wires to the motherboard. I’ve tried to hold this wire steady to see if any power would come about… but in vein… NO….

I dont mind having to take it apart for a good inspection but not sure how to do this to help this little fella… :(

If anyone can help by giving me some positive actions or needs some images to see what my issues is, then you know what to do… POST HERE… 

I miss my Vaio TR5 and WILL bring him back from the grave with a little TR World help….. 8)  8)  8)

Ummm

How old is your TR ? Still under warranty ? My first thought would be that now that you have opened it up you might have nullified the warranty.
I havent opened my TR but are the wires from the power button soldered or clipped onto the MB ? May be you want to try soldering it if you have a solder iron. Was the monitor affected at all ? Maybe the screen was damaged too. Does it not power itself at all? I get a feeling its not just the loose connection.

Anyhow please provide some more info, pictures would be good too. Thanks.

Well… its just under warranty, 27th December 05 is the run out date… lol…

I am sitting here wondering if i should call sony, as i left a ticket on vaio-link and it pretty much led me to a link that says ring them…  :? (4days in ticketing… ahhh… Sony!! :evil:)

I checked it out and seems to be soldiered on, unfortunately i dont have a soldering iron… :( and you hit the nail on the head, I OPENED IT!!! But i was quite careful whilst doing it too, i didn’t take any snaps at the time but i can if u think it will help my situtation.

P.S. My Sony Destop RZ-424 graphics card has just today stop working (Code 41).... i’m starting to hate this X-Mas….  :cry:  :cry:  :cry:  :cry:  :cry:  :cry:

Oh… just to let you know,

the screen is 100% in good health, the battery charger still works day okay… :D

I’ve even tried the silly Sony site instructions to check if the power cable or battery is damaged, they are fine (but felt stupid doing it :?).

So I am worried that it is the motherboard now…. if it is… :( any idea of the cost of repair or self repair (estimates help my uni student pocket… :lol:).

Did I mention the laptop was IN THE ORIGINAL TR5 CASE when it dropped!!!! (Now thats gotta hurt a Vaio Lovers Heart… :cry::cry::cry:)

My time is also small, as I’m going to Denmark for X-Mas with my girlfriend next Wednesday 21st, so I gotta conclude this before the warrent time (27th Dec) as I return the 28th December….... :shock: :shock: :shock:

Here in the U.S. I think Radio Shack stores carry the smaller soldering pencils for the micro tasks. A magnifying glass would help during the operation.

Since you dropped it, if there are telltale impact marks on the casing I would try the do it yourself route, but I am somewhat skilled in soldering.

I feel for you. I dropped my T250 about 4 feet to a carpeted floor. There is an odd circular impact mark about the size of a small screw head on the handrest corner but the T250 works fine.

You droped your T250 4 times,  :shock:
My T250P have no get out from my hand, be just careful.
Perhap, you also have dust inside your LCD? My LCD has a small dust inside LCD and it was replaced after I sent it to Sony. New LCD is great, it’s seem brighter than older. I am very happy with my T now.

Soldering should be the simplest thing to be honest. Just remember to keep the device close to the tip of the 2 wires. Also i recommend soldering the wires together first and then soldering them again onto the MOBO. That way a thorough connection is ensured. So if the problem is loose connection, this should solve it.

If you have a flow tester, tap areas around the soldered wires to check for continuity. That should indicate much.

EDIT: Run your laptop connected to the power adaptor, and use the continuity check to see if there is flow around the MOBO. Check most connection points and look for a blink.

Maybe I will send mine in for dust repair too, unless I drop it down the stairs.

I will go out friday and buy a soldering iron from B&Q (hardware store). Just wondering if there is anything else I might need whilst repairing…

If i get a chance tomorrow I will pick up the necessaries but uni course work is an all nighter tonight, for tomorrow… (animation stuff - 3DS Max8) :wink:

You guyz are so on the ball here… tis’ a shame TR World dont do repair jobs…. I put my money were mouth’s prove….  8)

Since it is under warranty, I would suggest getting it serviced by Sony and probably extending the warranty. Should something go wrong with your solo fix you’ll have an even harder time getting it fixed.

I hope Sony will cover your droped TR with their warranty policy.
Just give it a chance.

Well Guyz….

I finally decided to ring Sony for a repair job…

Monday, DHL will come drop of a box and wisk my Vaio child away some where in europe (I think) for a repair.

I didn’t mention that it drop about 2ft… (opps….) although I dont really think that is the cause of my child’s issue….

I have been to kind and caring for such a little fella, that even with the case on it at that time, it leads me to believe its an internal matter (Motherboard).

Because when I really think back to 1st month I purchased him, he didn’t like me pushing his power button at times… but as we all know… LOVE GROWS :D… and you learn to live with these small issues in family life…

Here’s My Lappy Update…

I finally got back from xmas holiday in snowy denmark and was extremely happy to see a DHL courrier missied me earlier yesterday… 

Rung them up and rearrange it for delievery today, and now I write this topic on my lovely little TR5… Wooooooooo!!!         

They fixed 3 things, not sure of 2, but 1 was the lower outer case…

great news congratulations.

did they charge you anything? any comments from them?  i suppose you did not mention at any time that you droped it !

also, i have droped mine from 0,5 meters to the floor, they little fella was still working.  My heart went to hell when i saw it going down.  It’s like i m bonded to this thing and i am with it most of my day sometimes 18 hours.  you acn not replace this with another ...same model. or for a much better next gen TX series one !
