Hi Guys - thoughts on this, I suspect my 2-year-old TR’s hard disc has failed.

The TR had been freezing now and again, and the last time it did work, it got as far as the Vaio splash screen and a line came across the screen and it froze.

It will turn on, you get the lights, the drive makes a noise (seams normal noise, but little clunk on when the on button is pressed).

It won’t boot from the Sony recovery DVD

I can’t get into the bios (pressed the re-set button next to the Windows sticker underneath as well)

From earlier posts (Jiggy etc) I suspect the hard disc has failed and a new larger one, now they are available, sounds a good idea any way.

Before I order a new hard disc and work out if Sony or I are going to fit it! Could the problem be anything else??

Just bought a TX1XP in special edition blue! Excellent machine, but it would be nice to get the old TR1 up and running again, so any ideas appreciated

I hate to be the bringer of even worse news, but if you can’t get into the BIOS then it isn’t the hard disk that has failed. :(

How far does it get into booting from the recovery CD?

Thanks for the reply Pugwash, TR now working fine, now. The reason it wouldn’t boot turned out to be a bad stick of 256 memory upgrade, which had been in the machine for a couple of years! Should have checked the obvious things first…

As I thought it would take time to repair, I went and got a TX1 XP, the special edition blue, so it’s a bit redundant now, but the TR is still a great machine! From the posts on this site, I am not sure how long it would have been before the hard drive did actually fail!
