Weird thing happening on my network…

When I browse one of my network shares, I cannot see all the directories or files on the share. So, let’s say there’s 8 directories in the share. Only 4 of them will show up when I browse that share with Windows Explorer.

The weird thing is that it’s not a permissions problem (at least not on the surface) or an attributes issue. If I know the exact path of a directory that’s not showing up and type it in, I can go to that directory. The same goes for a filename. I type in the direct UNC path and file name and can play it.

I think I have narrowed it down to that specific system since all computers that try to connect to it have the same issue. On the actual system, all of the files/directories are visible with Windows Explorer.

So, any ideas on what may be causing this? Possible things to check? Need more info?

I’ve had this problem for months now, I can’t figure out what it is. Of my 11 or so computers, any given share will only show about 4 or 5. The others, I need to go to them directly by typing in the system name in the address bar.

Its not that big of a deal to me so I haven’t tried too hard to fix it, but if you come up with a solution, please let us know.

Ok, scratch that.

I have a Windows Server 2003 installed in a VirtualPC Window (running on top of Windows XP) and it CAN SEE ALL of the directories, sub-directories and files. It seems that all of the XP systems can’t see it. It’s so crazy weird!

Ok, I solved my problem or so it seems.

I found some hints here . Basically, it had to do with how I’m accessing the share through the “computer name”. I guess it’s a bug that Microsoft doesn’t seem to thrilled about fixing. At least there’s a way around it.

Thanks. I’ll check it out later tonight when I have more time…what’s odd is that it just happened out of nowhere.
