  I’m looknig at upgrading the processor in my “s” baby from a stock standard 1.6ghz to 1.8ghz dothan…. Just wondering if I would notice any difference in performance in games, overall performance etc… Any ideas guys?.... Thanks.

I would save the money, for accesoires or your next notebook purchase….

Yes, I don’t think you would notice much of a performance upgrade….

A bump of 200Mhz isn’t going to give you any tangible benefits. I’m not even sure going to 2Ghz (a 400Mhz bump) is going to be really noticeable unless you run very specific apps. The 1.6 you already have is a Dothan as well.

If you’re going to upgrade I’d go with at least the 2Ghz model for it to make any sort of sense. Of course, it really depends on what kind of stuff you’re running.

The model that I have doesn’t have a Dothan CPU it is 1.6ghz with 1mb Level 2 cache, not 2mb. Its the aussie model….

Ah ok. Still the 2MB cache does not make a huge difference in overall performance. You looking at maybe 5-10% performance increase on average for the extra cache. So still, the jump to 1.8Hgz Dothan probably isn’t worth the expense. I’d still wait for 2Ghz…

Hi everyone - been a while!

I just dropped in to mention I removed the stock 1.7Ghz processor in my S360 (to use in another machine). I replaced it with a 2.0Ghz 755 and it’s been running smoothly since.

There is a noticeable temperature increase when the cpu is spiked. p Emulation benefited a *little* from the upgrade. (300Mhz only goes so far..) It’s really hard to tell if this has helped when playing any PC games like UT, etc. I’m going to speculate that it probably helped with iTunes a little - especially when you’re scrolling.

Installation was the hardest yet - but mainly from a loose post which I didn’t expect. The posts that hold the heatsink can be easily be unscrewed from the motherboard (you don’t want this - you only want to remove the spring loaded screws _from_ the posts. I needed to tighten the screws and ended up taking every daughterboard to accomplish this task.

Overall, if you have an extra 755 (this model *shouldn’t* accept anything higher according to the manual) it *is* possible to throw it in. It’s probably more of a pychological upgrade then anything - it’s my first notebook to reach the 2Ghz barrier. )

I assume this holds true for a S170 as well?  It would be a shame if I can’t upgrade past a 755 in the future.

I don’t believe the S170s will go past 2.0GHz (755)....oh wait, I take that back there is currently one clock speed that’s available. It’s the 765 (2.1GHz) and should work since it’s electrically compatible with the socket, bus speed, etc.

That’s actually the fastest chip possible with the exception of the 2.13GHz (770) chip.

Yep, guess you’re right about that groovy.  Hope they come out with even faster ones though.

I’m recently thinking about the cpu upgrade… i’m trying to go the fastest and i don’t remember if its the 765 thats compatible or 770.

EDIT:  I’ve gotten it straight.  Went for the 755 upgrade to make myself feel good.  300MHZ isn’t that big of a bump but wanted to max it out and not invest on a new laptop just yet.

My question is, what is the silver liquid/goop that goes on top of the processor when installing?
