Just wondering since I live in South Florida and hurricane Wilma is about to pounce on me and possibly kill the AC power in my neighborhood; is there some way I could buy a 12 V DC adapter; something with a cigarrette plug for my T250? Fortunately I have such an adapter for the Powerbook.

You could get a power inverter that converts the 12v current from the lighter into 120v AC outlets.  I recently used one for my SRX during my katrina-related travels, worked great.

Thanks for the tip. Just hope we can catch the eye of this hurricane so we can go out and patch the roof a bit. Leaking roof is a real downer :shock:

Still without power, I took your advice and bought not only a 150 watt converter from Radio Shack (which is super small, plug in directly to your car cigarrete lighter without a cable) but an extra car battery for my car, but I am using the car battery in my room as the power source for the converter. This is so cool. I can use the laptop and my small 20 watt desk lamp, which is quite bright, and probably some other appliances at the same time. Excellent! Thanks again for the tip!

Absolutely! Guess you haven’t heard of the EVDO card? you can slip them into your laptop and you need no base stations or routers; they work like a mobile phone does and you can get broadband access with them. Check out Verizon.com

I’ve had an account with Verizon for almost a year. I can get on the net anywhere in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area; even in a moving vehicle.

To date the best card available to my knowledge is the Kyocera KPC650. I origionally had a different card but purchased the KPC650 brand new from this guy:

If you buy one retail it costs about $300, mine cost $232

But if you get one with a contract from Verizon it is considerably lower, in fact my old card was free after rebate when I got the contract with Verizon. They have a deal out now; if you are already a Verizon customer with a “voice” (telephone/mobile phone) contract then you only pay $59 a month for wireless BroadbandAccess. Unfortunately if you don’t have such a contract then it’s a steep $80/month.

Anyway it’s a lot of fun if you can afford it. I play with my T250 on the job, surfing the net and no one is the wiser.

In the past, I’ve used a university dial-up account with my laptop for net access without electicity.

For some reason it felt so cool to be using the internet without working lights.

I’ve presumed that you connecting has something to do with mobile networks. 

EVDO card doesn’t mean anything to me since I’m in Croatia (Europe).
Here, we have EDGE and UMTS.

It seems to me that Verizon has a very good maintenance of their transmitters considering hurricane not doing damage to their network…

Verizon has 80% of it’s towers backed up by emergency generators. Unfortunately we can’t say as much about the gasoline stations here. So people are running out of gas and can’t get to work. BUt I don’t mind a small vacation…
