After letting this go for a few days I started thinking… is it normal to ship an entire laptop to the manufacturer when all they need to do is install a hard drive? Just about anyone can install a laptop hard drive, so I’m curious is if I should be concerned about mailing my laptop to Sony just to have them install a new hard drive.
My biggest conern is that I’ll receive my laptop back in good working order, but something else is either broken or not as in good of condition as I had shipped it to them.
I think you’ve learned your lesson. Never buy tap warranty. Extended warranty for cars is alright as long it is offered by the manufacturer, but for electronics ... try to avoid.
I had sony replace a Tr drive last year when I was in LA, and it took just 4 days roundtrip to the service center in SanDiego. The box was under compusa extended warrenty and the machine even came back cleaned. I thought the service was pretty good, althought the compusa extended warrenty was not cheap. Replacing the TR harddrive is easy, true, but for someone with good eyes, small fingers, and ability to follow Groovyone’s fine online instructions (that did not stop me, and here is what happened the last time I opened my case: http://www.siliconpopculture.com/sonytr/viewtopic.php?t=5263&highlight;=)
anyway, good luck, and I would trust the sony service center in SD…
