So today i was just surfing the web, stepped away for a couple of minutes, then when I returned, I see a Blue Screen Of Death! So I restart my laptop and it won’t boot into windows! It gets stuck at the Microsoft XP loading page while the hard drive makes this faint clicking noise that keeps on stopping and go. Is the hard drive on my TR3AP dead?

very likely. Most of the time if you hear even number of clicks in a sequence of any kind ... the drive has been fried.

If you’re seeing the logo, the harddrive is probably fine since I think that’s stored on the harddrive.

Are you out of your mind? The area where the boot files are located might not be corrupted just YET. Unless he does a drive health check, he won’t be able to sleep at night, knowing that the drive can go caput the next time he reboots.

o wells, brought a replacement 60 gig mk6006gah. Bye wimpy 40 gig. I do hope it still works as I have a lot of work and files on it.

The 1.8” have the same interface as the 2.5”. If you have an usb enclosure, move your files that way, it is safer and you won’t rely on windows to crash if it can’t read some system file and give you a BSOD

rattling doesn’t mean it is dead. It just means the heads are not parked. The more you rattle it the less chance to recover the data. Every time you shake it the plates get scratched. It is not ‘exactly’ like that but believe me ... close

Unless fatigio is a major corporation or there is a winning lotto number on the drive it’s not going to be worth the money to recover a 1.8 drive anyway. so might as well shake away.
