Think Secret says no. I don’t think a video iPod makes sense at all. The first problem is content. With the original iPod, content was easy, even before iTMS. Just put in a CD and click the import icon. You didn’t need to get anything illegally. With video, whether TV or movies or what have you, it’s either difficult, time-consuming, space-consuming and questionably legal to get content (either via downloading or the whole fair use vs DMCA thing). An iTunes Movie Store only addresses the latter issue. Then there’s the matter of where you are going to actually view the content. Unlike music, which is a background thing, video requires a certain amount of attention to enjoy properly. Unlike many other countries, it’s relatively unusual for those in the US to commute via trains every day.

I feel the same way, but believe me, apple will tweak it as much as they can. It’s all damage control.
i know you can never believe anythjing politicians or tech salesman say, but, Steve Jobs did come out a few months ago and state that there would not be a Video iPod.

Gilbert, go where? I’m old enough to remember audiophiles saying the same thing about Bang & Olufsen when Sony and other Asian companies got into the audio market. Seems to be a parellel, albiet far stretched. Quality vs. Price. Style vs. Replaceable Parts. Cool vs. Ugly.
However, I have lost all belief that Apple is better then any other company across the board with the introduction of the Ipod. Which IS over priced and the quality is not all that good (although that review of the Nano being run over and dropped from buildings disputes this feeling). All I know is that the 2ndG line is pretty much crap.
Well, if they make a 256gig recordable VPod, then I’d tape one to the side of my canon XLS2. Now that would be cool.
 jigs

You asked me a question and then answered it yourself.
If Apple doesn’t change it will naturally go away. There is no quality in Apple. Just overprised slick rigs with overstated benches.
As much as they push their stuff towards the snob market, people aren’t THAT stupid to pay 5x time the price of a regular PC.

I certainly won’t argue with you about their lying marketing dept (I’ve gotten into arguments with Mac-head friends over this - they seem to take it personally) but people have been predicting the death of Apple for 25 years now. What Apple has done since the advent of the IBM PC clone business is to stake out a secure place in the premium computer and design/creative niches. They don’t compete on price, so their margins are healthy, unlike the rest of the hardware industry. They must be doing something right, because they have a rabid fanbase and very high customer loyalty rates. They’re on much better ground than Gateway, who can’t do enough volume to compete with Dell and HP in the low-margin game. I’d say at this point, they’re on firmer ground than Sony is. I’d even go as far to say that Sony has a lot to learn from Apple about how the US market works and how to capture their target audience. (Yes, I realize this could only happen if Sony underwent a total corporate overhaul dwarfing the one currently going on.)

Yup. IMO the closest they came is right before taking back Jobs and right before he introduced the original all in-one Mac with the funky colors. (not sure if thats the original iMac)
Before that they were in a free-fall…nothing new, everything going wrong. He came in…came up with that iMac and the iPod…

Close. That was the second iMac generation. The original one was the blue-green one. Man our creative people went nuts over those goofy-looking things. Thankfully the monitors weren’t very big. Then they came out with the blue-green Toilet G3 towers. Then the whining started…

25y ago ... I don’t know, but now it is time to go. At this point Apple has nothing new or different to offer.. The software/hardware is identical/similar, no performance gain, just tweaked benches. The different/cool factor has been lost forever. Most of my friends and coworkers are leaning towards the PC market now. We’ve even replaced all the G5 in our R&D department. I know a lot of people who have been advocating Apple all that time and now most of them have lost faith and bought PCs.

But then again if we could predict/imagine the next innovative design, then we’d be working in silicon valley right now.

Like I said before, I’m totally with you on the benchmark thing. You can build an AMD or Intel box that can leave a G5 in cinders in the real world. I definitely dispute the “cool factor” loss. Anyone who’s being honest will admit that 90% of the industrial design that Apple has been cranking out has been top-notch. Last I checked, they had 3 designs in the MoMA’s industrial design gallery. Apple has the first genuinely user-friendly UNIX desktop OS, which is definitely saying something. As far as people ditching Apple, most creative types I know are sticking with Macs.
Just out of curiosity, what industry do you work in in what area of the country? I’m in music, which means a lot of the people I deal with also do print media and web work in addition to music production. We might have different views on Macs due to our respective industries.

I am a technologist and work in the field of Telecommunications. ISPs, WISPs, Telecoms, large corporations, hospitality and pharmacuticul industries, you name it. I prefer not to stay at a place for too long. It bores me. :o
