IMO, upgrade hdd is easy when you opened your x505.
Only Toshiba MK3006GAL and MK4007GAL can fit x505.

Nah there are no 1.8” 80 gig hard drives available yet. 40 gig is the max for now.

I don’t think you’ll be able to shoehorn a 80 GB HD into the X505. The 40, 60 and (hypothetical) 80 GB models are 2-platter drives. The X505 has AFAIK only come with the 1-platter models, which are significantly thinner than the 2-platter models.

Nop, 80gig is MK8007GAH has 8mm in height. x505 requires 5mm in height so only any model of MKxxxxGAL can fit x505.

Originally, I was going to put the new drive into an external USB box for cloning, but I couldn’t find one that would accept the Toshiba 1.8” drive, so I just used a spare USB external hard drive as the intermediate clone.  Everything worked easily with no problems, and the machine booted up perfectly with the new drive.  Now, if we could just speed up the CPU….

In theory it should be identical. The only difference between the two drives is areal density. Spindle speed and number of platters is the same.
