I was able to play some with the new LF Pak today. Installed new version of LFA-PC2 - interestingly enough it is also available in Japanese!
The setup process was amazingly quick and easy! I was surprised because I was running NetAV mode (accessing TV/AV stuff on the go) in just a few minutes. Thinking back, when I dealt with setting up LF-X1/X5, it took me a few hours before I figured out how to get NetAV working. That really was not a good way to attract customers.
Also now you can configure the Base from a web browser. I was able to add my LF-X5 monitor to the new Base Station.
The quality of NetAV streaming (live TV over the net, or aka place-shifting) is better as long as you have 300 kbs upload link.
I’ll do some more experimenting, and add as needed to this thread.
As for me, UPS and Sony strike again. For some reason my orders require a signature and I am never home…and they won’t leave it with the office…so I need to re-order this when I get a credit from the first one…just like the VC20….grrr SonyStyle.
I seriously can’t wait to try it out. My connection is a bit slow…only about 350up, so hopefully it will be nice and clear when I am on the road.
I’ve just had SonyStyle deliver straight to my office rather than to my home address. Many people I work with (particualry apartment dwellers without doormen) find that more convenient, plus when it’s shipped UPS or Airborne, it usually cuts a day off the shipping time. I once got a DVD-ROM from SonyStyle less than 24 hours after I ordered it (with 2-day shipping)!

Sorry, I meant the leasing office at my development. I wonder if I have the balls to have them deliver the package to me at class?
My father is a professor and often teaches undergrads. He’s told me that it’s definitely one of the perks of the job “and a new crop of 18-year-olds comes in every year.” It’s a double-edged sword though, as student-teacher “ethical violations” are taken very seriously in acedemia.

That’s why I would make a terrible teacher…I have no willpower for electronics, cars, or women
I usually ship my SonyStyle orders to my business address (very convenient - it always arrives early morning) since I always miss it at home (unless I leave a note on the door with my signature). FedEx delievered that LocationFree set to me, not UPS btw.

Yeah FedEx is better about that with me. I guess it depends on the area because this is twice now that SonyStyle + UPS did this. I get UPS all the time and they just leave it at the office, but not a SonySyle package…grr.
I have not tried that yet. What I did do is - I added my LF-X5 monitor to the new Base Station (LF-B1). I’ll attempt what you are trying to do and see what happens.
Good questions. Here is what I think:
1. You do need to be physically present to set up your Base and your notebook computer and it is only a one time process. Once it is all setup, you can mail the Base to Japan and have her parents connect it to the PVR, High Speed Internet.
2. My only doubts are: since the hardware (the TV tuner) in the Base is set to work in the US, I am afraid something might not be compatible in Japan, though to my knowledge US and Japan use the same NTSC. It is always worth a try though.
3. Also I believe you can set only one desktop or notebook to receive NetAV stream at one time. Sony provides with one serial key per the software. The first version of the Locationfree TV Player came with 2 serial keys though.
If I think of something else, I might add later.

The NetAV stream to one computer at a time is interesting ... we plan to set it up on my wifes PC and then “migrate” it to a HTCP (thats being built). But I guess as long as we keep to a single stream at any one time we should be fine - right?
I do not quite understand what you mean by migrating? See the thing is - when you install LocationFree Player, you will have to use the serial key and Sony provides only one for some wierd reason. So only one registered PC will be able to access the set up and other functions of the base. By installing it on her parent’s computer you will tie that computer to the base. That is why you will need to choose your notebook to configure the Base and take it with you back to the UK
The physically having to be present when setting it up is the thing that is confusing me ... does this mean once it is set up we can’t “migrate” it to another computer?
Would this work ... setting up the base using her parents laptop as the receiving computer in Japan, and then “migrating” the receiving computer to our PC when we get back in England? Where I guess its just a matter of installing the NetAV software and pointing at the right IP address?
No you can’t just migrate, as you saw in my explanation above.
does the base unit and receiving computer both need to be physically in the same place when you set it up?
Yes, they do. See, when you set it up you will have to press and hold a setup button on the base and be on the same network for the PC to access the setup page of the Base. You can use Easy Setup option that will walk you through the steps and you can use your notebook On the Go to access the JP TV.
Nick,
I am glad it helped some. It seems a bit tricky in the beginning but you had a good idea to test it all out in Japan first.
As for the slingmedia, I am not familiar with its setup, so cannot comment. You might wanna do some googling around and see if there is any forum dedicated to it.
