Umm… why wouldnt this work?  It would be just like treating the TV as a 2nd monitor… just drag the viewer over to the other screen… why wouldnt it work??

I don’t know the actual technical reason why…i’ve just been told that it wont work. Here is an auction for one:

I assume because he got a lot of complaints about them not working. They aren’t expensive though, if you want to try it, you wont be losing much.

The notebook is outputting a VGA (analog RGB) signal which most TVs cannot accept directly since the electrical signals are not compatible. Also, RGB separates red, green and blue. Most TVs accept S-video, composite or component and none of those are a RGB interface. The exception to this is European SCART based devices which can accept an analog RGB signal.

Yes. Actually, it would be hard to find a projector that doesn’t have VGA-in. It’s almost standard nowadays. Of course, that’s for most business oriented/prosumer models I’ve seen.

Hey, I bought that particular cable that you show on the ebay link for my S1XP laptop, did check to see if it was compatible and it seemed to suggest the ATI Mob. Radeon supporting integrated tv out but I had no luck getting it to work - any ideas? Or is this the same case as the TR? Cheers.

The ATI Radeon Mobility chipset does support TV output by design. However, it supports it directly via a specific TV OUT connector and not via the VGA connector.

Many people are confusing these two things as the same thing. To my knowledge, there are almost no consumer video cards or notebook graphics chipsets that can output a component, s-video, or composite signal via the VGA port. VGA ports spit out RGB signals. A lot of computer monitors used to take RGB via BNC connectors but since like less than 1% of the market used it most manufacturers dropped it.

If your TV has a SCART port (if you live in Europe) you may be able to take in the VGA signal directly since RGB SCART adapters exist but this is fast becoming obsolete. However, you will have to likely lower your screen resolution since most regular TVs cannot handle super high resolutions.

Ah cheers, well it wasn’t that expensive so think it was worth testing, guess I’ll have to think about getting a proper connection like the Grandtec, just a shame they don’t sell it directly in the UK.
