Hello all,
just wanted to let you know that the only way to resolve the black screen problem with the occasional white lines is to replace the CCD. I ordered one from Nextronics and was up and going again.
I suggest you first be sure it is not a driver problem and then get your CCD replaced. If you notice that the screen flashes occasionally when you fiddle with the contrast or luminosity or see white lines as shown in the above posts, your CCD is defective and you need to replace it.
I have had a couple of Sony CCDs (PAL colour mini cameras for video conferencing) in the past fail in a very similar way so I know what I saw when this happened to me. Furthermore, this problem is known amongst retailers (I have a TR5MP).
A tip to save your CCD and IC camera electronics is to disable it in the power saving feature of the laptop - this will completely remove power from the camera usb port even if your laptop is on. The camera is nothing else than a USB camera (the plug on the left of the motion eye is an “embedded” USB port, you can hot plug it normally) so to avoid disconnecting it just disable it in the power saving options and it won’t “die” mysteriously.
BTW my laptop is about 3.5 years old and the motion eye crapped out on me just a couple of months ago. I only used it 4 times literally in the whole laptop’s life so it has nothing to do with how much you use it, it’s just how long you keep it powered (in my power options it was always on) - that’s enough to kill it.
It cost me around 170USD to get that CCD shipped to me because I live in Europe. Nextronics did a great job and the shipment was on time. I just hoped that Sony would step ahead and get these things swapped under warranty as it obviously is NOT an isolated case. No wonder the new TRs don’t come with a built in CCD.
Hey Sony, if you are willing to refund me just drop me an email!
