I’ve read (and found out the hard way) that installing newer video drivers will cause problems such as loosing the hardware zoom button, having trouble using external displays, etc.

Why exactly is that?  Are the newer drivers just not compatible with our TRs?  Or did Sony have Intel customize our drivers to work?

Is there any hope that newer Intel drivers will be 100% compatible with our TRs?

And for those interested, I was unable to run Guild Wars on my TR5 with the stock drivers.  There is a problem somewhere with the Extreme drivers & the newer DirectX I think..  I have a feeling it isn’t completely supported by our drivers.. 

So I installed the newest Extreme driver and thus lost my zoom button and the system would reboot whenever I selected an external monitor.  And I still couldn’t play.

I then read that by reverting to a driver version between ours and the newest (can’t recall which right now) I would be able to play.  It worked.  But I still have the other problems listed above. 

I needed quick external monitor support so wanted back.  Driver rollback didn’t work.  System restore didn’t work.  I even used Driver Cleaner Pro and reinstalled the Sony shared video and I still reboot whenever I select an external monitor :(  Rats..

External support works but only after the system reboots…..  Is there no way back?

You might not be aware of a setting. Right-click your desktop (Display properties). Select Settings / Advanced / General. In the bottom frame, “After I change the display settings:” Do you have “Restart the computer ... ?”

Thanks for the reply, but that isn’t it.  It’s set to apply changes without restarting.

When I hit Fn+F7 and select monitor the external display flashes for a second and then the system restarts.  When it comes back up it’s ok, but that initial reboot every time is wearing thin..

this is a problem i have seen on 2 TRs now, after some point in the intel driver upgrade cycle (after loosing the zoom function) u will always get a blue screen of death if u use the function keys to switch displays.  i always right click the system tray icon (Intel Graphics 2 for mobile) and then Graphic Options, Output to, Intel Duel Display Clone….You can also choose other options or set up a profile for a 2 click procedure. 

I have been burned with this one…setting up a preso in a hall and forgetting that function keys do not work and have a reboot minutes before the preso is to start…embarrasing!

ps. i think this is another case of Sony sloppyness…they should have forced Intel to continue support for the zoom button and Sony should have tested the drivers and made sure they worked before they were released.

This is a tough topic to get responses on..  I’m assuming it’s just not a problem for most TR users - most don’t fuss with the drivers?  Probably a wise choice

Is there any fix other than a complete system restore?  I did use Drive Cleaner Pro and reinstalled the shared video off the CD but something bad is still there..  No idea what though.
