[quote author=“TonyC”]this piece of news… is so friggin UNnewsworthy to me… who GIVES a rats ass. just look at who uses apples (ipods): buncha hipsters, yuppies and artsy fartsy types. granted, i support the arts, i donate to orchestras/museums. But can someone just kill their PC divsion already? and let them sell their stupid ipod shuffles?
I do.
Actually, my focus on this is the mobile aspect. I really don’t think Apple cared that much about their desktop systems. It’s the lost sales on the higher margin notebooks that they’re concerned about. Notebooks growth gains are rising by huge percentages a year while desktops plummet. Apple hasn’t been able to ship a G5 laptop and no one wants to buy a new G4 one since they’re not adding anything new.
I will find it interesting to see what Apple can do with Intel mobile technology. It’s entirely possible that Apple, with new freedom given Intel mobile technology, will be able to create a more compelling mobile platform than what we have for Windows (which I think is decent but not great). Apple’s next generation mobile platform will likely be very compelling and it will force other companies to take notice. I suspect Sony will be one of the companies keeping an eye on this since this is their turf. On the PC side, Sony has been one of few companies continuing to innovate and keep competitors imitating. I just point to XBrite (everyone has a glossy screen now), widescreen models, carbon fibre cases, long standard battery life, latchless screens, and near lightest models in every category.
I’m sure Apple will figure out some deal where they don’t have to stick a Centrino sticker on their products. Actually, it’s pretty easy since they do their own marketing and won’t necessarily want any of Intel’s marketing dollars.
