Since my brother in law want to buy my TR2. I was giving a look at the market to see what laptop can suit as a replacement for me.
Actually, my TR2 is really perfect for me except the screen size a bit small(I can’t buy a LCD Screen since I am not a lot at home) and maybe the hard drive a bit slow sometimes, but with 1GB it happens really few times.
I am definitly looking for a ultraportable laptop, I don’t think I can come back to a heavy one, who break my shoulder by carrying it.
I had a look at the Asus W3, Samsung Q30, Sony S, but its difficult to check the differences. For instance, the S has many different configuration S2HP, S3HP, S3XP…. and it’s difficult to see if the laptop is a good configuration, or if it hides some crap behind.
I know a lots of people have already change their TR, so advice are welcome.
S is going to be a big downgrade in terms of battery life, remember that. I find that to be the major difference with my S3. Other than that its a solid laptop and a gorgious screen. Nothing really matches the speed and style, i could have been just a bit happier with some more stamina.
For ultra portable I like the T. Even without the web cam and built in mic, I believe its still the best avaiable. My next laptop is going to be the T.
My next (god knows how many years) machine will definitely be the S unless Sony comes out with something as classy as the TR. As far as the screen size goes, after changing the resolution on my desktop from 1024x768 to 1280x1024 px everything on my TR appears bigger now

Keep in mind the Samsung Q30 has neither integrated optical drive nor PCMCIA slot, two things which may be rather important in a notebook computer. S series is nice; Not quite as compact as T/TR, but better if you want to do any 3d gaming.
I have placed an order for the S380. I wont be getting it for about 2 or so weeks as i ordered with a 60GB HD and Sony are meant to configure it and then ship it to the guy im getting it off and he will ship it from FL to London, UK.
I was looking to get a T250, but then i decided to opt for the larger screen.
I will let you all know how it pans out when i receive it.
So finally, I go for a Sony S3HP (I think those kind of id are only use in european version).
It has a
- Intel Pentium M 730 à1,6 GHz Centrino
- 512 Mo
- 60 Go
I didn’t use it that much yet, because I get it during lunch break, and now I am at work. But my first impressions are good.
Before getting the S I try a FS series, but I was so disapointed that the quality of this series is so low. Also, since it’s was a new centrino design (i.e : Sonoma), I got a lot of trouble using wifi with my broadband access (in fact my wireless broadband modem was looking like a christmas tree since almost all errors lights were blinking ).
Anyway, I hope to have happy living with my S (and my girlfriend too )
I keep in touch with my previous TR2MP too, since I sold it to my brother in law.
Anyway, guys thank you all for you advice and your help on decision making.
I am also thinking about selling my TR5AP (email me if you are interested in purchasing) and replacing it with a different model.
One of the models I am especially interested in is the new Toshiba R200. It has just been released and has an impressive hardware and feature set. Opinions?
I think the best idea you can get from a laptop is by trying it yourself. So choose a shop where you can bring it back if you are not satisfied.
Like I already said, before buying the S, I give a try to the FS Series, because specs where almost the same between them, but my surprise was that on the paper they were quite similar (except form factor of course), but when you use it, they have really nothing in common. So you can make wrong choice easily if you read only paper specs.
Also, I heard toshiba laptop quality has decrease since some year. It seems to make price lower they decrease global quality. On the other hand, the good point is that on some laptop they include 2 year warranty. But personally I never had a Toshiba laptop. So I can’t judge, but pics look good.
