Hi there,

is it really safe to use 5GHz Wifi with a 2.4GHz antenna? or are there any kind of “hybrid” antennas for 2.4Ghz and 5GHz networks?

The reason I’m asking is because I want to replace my ipw2200 b/g network card in my TR5MP with one which does rfmon mode a little bit better, suitable for the discovery of open and secured networks, and whichs upports 812.11 a/b/g

It’s perfectly safe to do so. There’s no difference. All of the A and BG notebooks use the same kind of cable.

gr00vy had no problems installing and using his 5 GHz-capable Netegriti card on his TR1AP. The two frequencies are in the same general range and once you get into that range, optimal antenna length gets rather small anyway.

Can someone tell me how they do it? I really don’t know anything about radio physics but I remember from school that antennas need to be lambda/2 or something similar, which means half of the wavelength (or something similar, again it’s been a long time since I had to learn this).

And 2.4GHz compared to 5GHz doesn’t seem like “almost the same”.

Yeah, the TR (and the S for that matter) comes with an antenna that is compatible with both frequencies. I should clarify that you can get 2.4GHz and 5GHz optimized antennas but most antennas designed for notebooks are generally 2.4/5GHz optimized.

As to how they do it? I have no idea…

I forgot most of my physics knowledge right after finals. I was told this by my brother who has a masters in EE.

2.4 GHz and 5 GHz are basically in the same range. One is nearly a double of the other, so from what I understand, the antennas should be of similar lengths (you can double optimal length for high gain). That’s a quite different range than the 85-110 MHz frequencies that FM radio stations use here in the US for example.

im going to learn about this stuff in my physics class next semester.. oh well,.  :wink:
