The PS3s use of Blu-Ray doesn’t automatically mean they’re going to use the 50GB variant of it. Given that there’s still a debate if that format is ever going to be mainstream, the announcement of Blu-Ray doesn’t mean a whole lot right now. It sounds nice though…
XBox’s hardware specs are extremely good on paper and definitely give developers a lot of breathing room in terms of what they can do. The lack of an integrated HDD is interesting though since games will solely have to run off the disks and memory cards. I wonder what kind of affect that will have load times, etc.
The PS2 had pretty astounding graphics at the time and look how long it took developers to maximize the graphics for that platform. So, we’ll see how well developers can quickly ramp up and take advantage of all of that power. The original Xbox was easier to program for since it was essentially a PC. The new architecture is vastly different so the new SDKs will take some time to mature. Games should look amazing and there should be enough processing power to ensure things like good AI (assuming there’s good AI programming) and physics.
It’s too bad Xbox360 doesn’t support the older games as that would have helped to keep software sales up even though they’re gambling on the hardware sales with such an early announcement. Kudos for the big N for making the “Revolution” GameCube compatible.
I’m not sure if I like the new Xbox360 design but it’s vastly better than the original monolith…aka the “black PC AT case” as I called it. Changeable face plates is an interesting decision. I’m not sure why people would care that much…but then again, I want one of those special white gloss finish PS2s.
