[quote author=“Drachen”]T-Mobile charges me $20 for unlimited data with a voice plan, $30 without. Unfortunately, with T-Mo you’re stuck in GPRS land. If Cingular had as good a deal on data, I’d have jumped a long time ago. I don’t want to deal with no data at all, but I don’t use it enough to justify $80/mo.
Yeah, I have that same plan including the T-Mobile Hotspot plan which is also discounted at $20/month for a month-to-month plan. You can get that same price if you sign up for a one year contract (as a non-T-Mobile customer). So, I now pay $40/month total for GRPS and Hotspot abilities which gives me decent coverage…especially since there’s a Starbucks almost everywhere. I wouldn’t mind a 1/2 speed EV-DO connection for half the price…I just can’t justify paying more than I’m paying now.
[quote author=“Drachen”][quote author=“jashsu”]EDGE GPRS, in many cases.
Edit: I wonder if it would be possible to hack the T350’s client to connect to TMO, assuming they use a sim card.
Where are you that you have EDGE on T-Mobile USA?
It’s usually SIM-locked in hardware. With phones, usually you put a code in or you can flash the firmware.
I can’t give personal account of it, but I recall reading that users in Washington DC and SF Bay Area have EDGE access. Supposedly will roll-out nationwide by end of year. The T-Mobile section of howardforums may have more details.

They’ve been doing limited tests in a few areas for about 2 years, AFAIK. T-Mo has made it very clear they’re in no rush to improve bandwidth soon, as they’re fighting capacity problems and spectrum limitations. The CEO even claimed a few months ago that he didn’t expect 3G in the US until 2007.
Interestingly, I agree with his reasoning: not that many customers are demanding it. Us geeks like it, but as the posts on this thread indicate, not even we are willing to pay a significant premium to get it. “Why do I need internet?” is as much a perpetual question in the phone stores as “Does it come without a camera?”
i unlocked the modem using the instructions from gilbert. i am currently using the fido/microcell (Canada) unlimited gprs sim card CDN 50 per month. no contract on a monthly payment plan. what is interesting is that there is NO roaming charges in the USA. So that is about half the price of unlimited GPRS in the USA.
Gilbert, what was your tweak to have both the wwan and wlan working at the same time? Are you still using the cingular connection manager? or are you using something else?
upgrading from my trusted tr1mp, the t350 is a breath of fresh air. having used the tr1mp for more than two years, it held the record for the longest running laptop in my personal usage. the tr1 was without a question the best notebook i have owned. the t350 improves on it. running the tr1 for an average of 16 hours a day for the last two years and opening and closing the lid about 10 - 12 times per day has taken its toll on the hardware.
coming from europe, i find that the gsm mobile service in north america to be very spotty with poor reception. i am using cingular in the usa and fido in canada.
well very interesting, a friend of mine, member of the united nations, bought this machine upon my recommendation fit to his needs, in a local electronics store and it has a port for the simcard to connect to the internet via gprs (im not sure for umts) ... nevermind
[quote author=“gilbert”]good for your friend. It might be a special model by sony made specifically for him since he is from the UN ... Who knows, or it could be someone’s imaginary friend talking sorry for the sarcasm
