Anybody know the big differences between the cybershot t1 vs. t7? I’m thinking about getting one for my wife for mother’s day but don’t know if the newer is the better. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx for the reply. I like the idea of it being so thin, but at some point, i would imagine that it gets a bit tricky to hold steady without thumbing all your shots.
Anybody that can comment on either of these models would be great…I’m a sucker for buying the latest and greatest, but i need a justification in my head to do so. The T33 is out of the question as it doesn’t have a slide cover and in my opinion, looks pretty damn goofy.
If you’re one of those who had a T1 and bought a T7 b/c the number 7 is bigger than the number 1, i really want to hear from you. I will know that i have finally found a fellow chump.

I haven’t seen a 7 in person yet. I plan to order it when I get back from my trip home, about 2 weeks, so I can help you for mothers day. The one thing that bothers me from the pics is that the directional keys on the back are on the left side and the picture button is on the right. On the T1 both are on the right…so you can take a pic and click the buttons with one hand, which does not look possible on the 7. That being said, for your wife I would take the 1. I really don’t see the need to spend close to double the money on essentially the same camera. The movie mode on the 1 is more then sufficient, IMO.
If you dont understand what I am saying about the buttons (it’s hard to write about it) look at the pics of the back of a 7 and the back of a 1 (or 33) you’ll understand. On the 7 the LCD is on the oppposite side.
Is this camera available as yet ? How on earth did sony manage to do a 3x optical zoom in there i’d never know.
Also why wouldnt they sell black else where in the world ? Apparently the colour black in T7 is available only in Hongkong and Japan.
sorta off topic, id go for a canon ixus 50 or 700 (european model naming, dunno what its called in the states), generally because the picture quality from canon is awesome ive read in quite a few reviews that because the lens is so small in the sony the pictures arent as great as other compact digi cams, the only downside to canon cameras are that you cant use the whole memory for a movie, theyre limited to pre defined time limits.
(i’ve got an ixus v3, had it for three years now, it was one of the first mainstream digicams and im so happy with it, very reluctantly would i choose another make)

All I know is that I got a black T1 from Japan off ebay. Makes me smile like a fool with a new stick :D
What is this about a new movie codec for longer movies? Could you go into a bit of detail?
I found the movie quality on the T1 amazing, only prob was that it was such high quality that it ate up gobs of space…
However, otherwise, I find the T1’s pics to be of horrible quality. I had mine for a couple of months and couldn’t believe how bad the pics were. The good thing was that every other thing about it was great, like design, GUI, features, etc. Only the pictures that came out of all that were shite.
I’m not entirely sure that the T7’s codec is really any different (or I haven’t seen any evidence that proves otherwise). The original T1 could take any length recording in the VX mode provided you use a “PRO” version DUO (which is essentially all of them over 256MB). The quality is pretty outstanding even compared to my old DV cam. The only improvement that I could see them make is to use MPEG4 instead of MPEG2. Of course, that would mean lower sales of the higher end MS PRO DUO cards…
Ye, would be interesting to read some reviews on T7. The flash looks like is the same as on other Ts, so I think it will take better pictures outside. The looks are very nice but can be deceiving like the Sony M1 camera. A lot of reviews indicated poor picture quality but decent video mode and amazing design (which could be somewhat awkward if you played with it personally).
I think it all depends on what you use the camera for. I’ve never been a big picture taker so having a smaller camera encourages me to take it out more. Yeah the picture quality isn’t the best in dark situations but I have no complaints about the pictures in general.

Mate is it possible for you to post some pictures from your T1 so we know how bad the quality is really ?
Dynamism say they can ship a T7 japanese version but the firmware is in japanese. The delivery to UK, would cost a fortune as well. So I’m going to wait till the camera comes to shops here and pay probably twice as much as you guys in america.
I wouldn’t say the quality is poor in general….but it can be if you don’t know the limitations of the camera. You can get good night shots (i.e. scenery shots that don’t require flash) if you set the camera down and use the timer feature (so there’s no jiggle when you use a longer exposure).
If you want good night shots with people in it then you need to remember about the weak flash and keep people within 5-7ft. max for good coverage. Also, there’s the possibility of red-eye even with the red-eye reduction turned on (since the flash is very close to the lens).
Those are really the only things you need to be concerned about. The first isn’t really an issue since almost every point and shoot has the same problem.

The JP version of T7 (black) has an option to choose English among other EU languages. So you should not worry about the firmware, and as far as I know the manuals are are in English as well as in JP. Check some Ebay auctions for T7 Black and see the pics.

Yeah when I got mine it was all in japanese, but there was a photocopy of the english manual! I seem to remember giving some members a chuckle when I asked for a translation of something on my screen only to have it come back as ‘open lens cover’

The T1 has 640 high/low the T7 just has 640 30fps. They don’t give you the choice and according to what I read its a bit higher quality.
