[quote author=“IcHiRoRaBbIt”]i see no need seeing that PC ram is alreadxy at 1 gig but its still a good concept i guess who knows really what the application will truely be but it will be cool!
Its not intended to replace or even supplement PC ram at all. PC ram, or volatile sram cells, are much much faster than even flash ram. Since flash is non-volatile, it acts more like a faster, less power-consuming portion of the hard drive. Stuff like windows drivers, executables, frequently accessed user files, etc: imagine if you could load, run, modify those as if they were on your hard drive, but without having to actually spin the platters. Thats what the whole point of this is about.
This is an idea thats long overdue. Personally I don’t see full flash drives ever replacing hard drives simply because the growth rate of hard drive capacity always outpaces the growth rate of flash capacity at the same price point. Sure servers and specialized applications might use it, but I don’t see it ever becoming commonplace for the end-user. This hybrid hard drive is probably a good go-between until a sufficiently cheap non-volatile solid state memory can replace platters.
