First thanks to all who contribute to this forum which has been very helpful.

I had a TR1MP and just bought a 9 months old TR5MP to profit from the DVDRW and bigger HDD.

Unfortunately here are the issues I discovered:

1) The HDD’s engine is noisier than the Tr1MP, it whisles at high pitch. Is this something others have noticed, otherwise I was thinking of sending the unit back for repair.

2) Worse is the UJ812 DVDRW !  As you might know it it can not be patched ( yet ?) and DVD region free does not work on it !  Moreover it makes a ticking sound when I play a DVD !!!!!    No luck !  Could you guys confirm if this noise or other issues are standard ?

3) I thought maybe I could resell my TR5MP on ebay and get this DVDRW from newegg:

Would this DVDRW work in our TRs ?  what about the face plate ?

It is amazing that two machines that are that similar can be so different, namely the most powerful one can be such a pain.  I travel a lot and buying sometimes a DVD to relax is common, and I can not do this with this TR5MP !

Any suggestions and informations are welcome.

Hi Nader, welcome on the forum !!

all i can say about remplacing the DVDRW is that you have to find a 9,5 mm thick one. If the one you found is like that then it should be ok… last thing you may wanna check for the connectors.. i have already seen that problem in other topic…
about you HDD a ticking noise is not a good noise… it might even be that your HDD is dammaged… you might wanna check that with some tools

The thing is, hard disks on the TR have a great knack of falling dumb. Make sure everything is backed up, i dont exactly know what noise your talking about, but its better to back up your data just in case. The noise your talking about is probably normal anyway. Yeh the dvdrw does make some irritating noise, but its all normal. Unfortunately there is no way to make your UJ 812 region free, so its better to buy a 9.5 mm drive and sell your UJ 812 on ebay, but make sure you retain the original bezel.

European Toshiba catalogue shows a new 9,5 drive, that will be more easy to make reion free.

Look for it.

I have definitely had better experiences with Toshiba drives.

I will search and let you guys know of the result.

One more question:

There are apparently Tr5MP with the UJDA 725 drive, is that one at least useable with DVD region free type of softwares ?

Sony has disabled all drives on its laptops to be locked to certain regions, so your best bet is to buy this drive directly from panasonic in order to be sure your drive would be region free, plus you also get to write dvd ram.

Are there any instructions or explanations for safely removing that bezel, I looked carefully and did not see (and did not force ) any clear part to press or push to remove it.

Is there somepace that lists my options for putting a DVD-RW in my TR3?

I would like to do this but don’t necessarily want to pay $475 for the Sony drive.
